Year 3/4 News

Learning Centre Two
We hope everyone had a restful term break. It's shaping up to be an engaging and exciting term, packed with many rich learning experiences and a variety of engaging activities for all students. Please see the reminders and upcoming event dates below for this term, and remember to check Class Dojo for any further updates. We are looking forward to the many opportunities ahead to grow, create and celebrate together.
Our overviews for this term are as follows.
ACMI Excursion
The end of Term 2 saw all the Year 3 and Year 4 students visit the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) in Melbourne, as part of our Inquiry into Media Arts, the students They learned how to apply the principles of shape, colour, and pattern to design and animate their own unique works. The students participated in a 'Stop motion startup' workshop, and this also involved a visit to a media gallery exhibition. They used collaboration skills to learn the principles of animation, explore the science behind animation, and create their own visually engaging stop-motion animation in a team.
Log Cabin Camp
The Log Cabin Camp in Creswick was an opportunity for our campers to develop a range of social skills and foster new friendships by connecting with other students. It’s pleasing that more and more families are seeing the benefits that children gain from camps in terms of both their physical and mental well-being.
Camps are also incredibly effective environments in which children can learn life-long attributes such as resilience, self-reliance, community-mindedness and perseverance. It may be taking on a new challenge, learning how to be a team player, learning how to manage on their own, gaining an appreciation for the environment, developing new skills, becoming more resilient, sharing a cabin space with others, being responsible for their own belongings, and even learning how to cook damper for the first time!
There’s something for every child participating in camp that will help them become a better person whilst further developing their personal and social capabilities. Below are some reflections from our students about camp:
“What I enjoyed about camp was doing the activities because these extended my learning on how to do new things.” - Eugenia 4 White
“Camp helped me to sleep alone in a cabin, and to do activities like the obstacle course.” - Erin 4 Blue
“I enjoyed spending the night with my friends and the Zip Line. - Lucas 4 Orange
“What made camp fun was the Zip Line because you got to throw a ball in a gap on a tree.”
- Sam 4 White
All camps absorb enormous amounts of planning and preparation. So a big shout out to the staff for their exceptional work in the planning and organisation of the Log Cabin Camp, and to our families that supported this event for our students.
Religion
The Year 3 students have been exploring the theme "Stories with a Message", focusing on the parables of Jesus, such as The Lost Coin and The Lost Sheep. Through these parables, students were encouraged to reflect on values like kindness, forgiveness, compassion, and making good choices. They responded creatively through art and writing activities that helped deepen their understanding and connection to their faith with their everyday actions and relationships.
Year 4 students are exploring ‘The Church’ and making connections between family, local parish, Archdiocese and the global Church. They have unpacked the different roles in the Catholic Church and used graphic organisers to record what they have discovered. They are currently looking at key figures such as St Andrew and St Mary of the Cross Mackillop & how they have impacted the growth of the Church in Australia and the world.
Literacy
In Literacy, we started the term exploring books such as LOL, G.O.A.T and Winner Winner Bin Chicken dinner written by Kate & Joe Temple. They have completed a book review about their favourite book. Students have created acronyms for different animals which they used to create their own story books. We are really looking forward to the authors Kate and Joe Temple visiting our school on Monday, 4th August. The authors will talk about their books and what it's like to be a writer.
Numeracy
In Numeracy, our Year 3 students have been learning how to read and solve worded problems using multiplication and division. They’ve been practising how to identify key information in a word problem, using the CUBES method, and show their working clearly to solve it.
Year 4 have begun the term with Multiplication and Division: Solving problems involving purchases and the calculation of change to the nearest 5 cents with and without digital tools. Next week they will begin to explore the world of angles. Estimating and comparing angles using angle names including acute, obtuse, straight angle, reflex and revolution, and recognising their relationship to a right angle.
Inquiry
Our Inquiry for Term 3 is Digital Technology. We learned how to stay safe online by understanding the importance of strong passwords and knowing who can be trusted online. Students identified their ‘safe adults’ who they could trust when they encountered a problem.
Wellbeing
Students have been learning the value of a meaningful apology. They described the different kinds of actions that can hurt or upset others and have practiced how to apologise when they have hurt someone. They used the Ingredients of a good or meaningful apology to construct meaningful apologies for the different scenarios.
- Look the person in the eye & use their name
- Say what you did wrong.
- Say how you think it made the other person
- feel.
- Say how you feel now that you see you did the
- wrong thing.
- Promise not to do it again.
- Say sorry (and mean it).
