Learning Centre Three

It has been a fantastic start to Term 3! The Prep students have settled back into the daily routines with confidence and enthusiasm. We’ve already seen great learning happening as students reconnect with their peers and take on new challenges.

This term is filled with exciting opportunities, including 100 Days of School, Book Week and our upcoming school production. We look forward to supporting your child’s growth and celebrating their successes throughout the term!

Principal’s Day

This week we celebrated World Principals’ Day by recognising the hard work and dedication of our wonderful principal, Justin. The Prep students signed a special card and were very excited to present it in person and share their appreciation. It was a lovely way to acknowledge all that Justin does for our school community!

Phonics

Throughout the year, as students have learned each new sound, they’ve also met a new character that Milo wanted to invite to his birthday party. In the story, Milo’s friends are secretly planning a surprise celebration for him, adding excitement with each new page.

Now that we’ve finished learning all the initial sounds in the Little Learners Love Literacy sequence, we marked the milestone by celebrating Milo’s Birthday! Students brought in toys from home to represent their favourite characters. During the morning block we re-read the story, played pass the parcel, decorated biscuits, and had a dance party. It was a fun way to celebrate their learning so far!

Congratulations to everyone who continued to read throughout the holidays. A lot of certificates were handed out this week to recognise all the reading that is happening at home. Regular practice at home reinforces the learning that is happening during our daily phonics lessons. Each night that you read a decodable text, library or home book, or practice some speed words or sounds, make sure to record it in your child’s reading journal.

Literacy

We’re looking forward to welcoming Kate and Jol Temple, the authors of the Bin Chicken series, to our school next Monday! To get ready for their visit, we’ve been reading Bin Chicken and Bin Chicken Flies Again together in class.

The students have been inspired by the stories and have been experimenting with their own writing. They’ve been learning to use exciting new vocabulary, including adjectives (describing words), speech bubbles, and onomatopoeia (words that sound like the noise they describe, such as squawksplash, or bang!)

Maths

In maths, the Prep students have been learning all about addition and subtraction. They’ve been playing games and using lots of hands-on materials to practice their skills.

Religion

In Religion, we’ve been learning about what it means to be a peacemaker. The students have created a beautiful display featuring handprint doves to represent peace, along with paper hearts where they’ve shared ways they can show kindness and compassion to others.

Wizard of Oz

Rehearsals are in full swing for our exciting school production of The Wizard of Oz! The Prep students will be taking the stage as cheerful munchkins and have been busy learning their songs: We’re Off to See the Wizard and Ding, Dong! The Witch is Dead.

The production will be held over two evenings: Wednesday, August 27 – Students with surnames beginning A–K Thursday, August 28 – Students with surnames beginning L–Z

We can’t wait to see our little munchkins shine on stage!

Buddies

There’s always a buzz of excitement in the centre on Tuesday afternoons when our Grade Prep and Grade 5 buddies come together! This term, the buddies will be working on a fun project—creating sock puppets

To help us get started, we kindly ask families to please send in one sock for your child to use and decorate as part of the activity.
