Year 5/6

Year 5/6 Cluster News
HOME INQUIRY:
Reading: Aim for 20 minutes minimum reading per night. We encourage students to read aloud, either to themselves or a parent. Don’t forget to record your book for the Premier’s Reading Challenge. This is due on the 4th of September.
Mathematics: Students are to work on the recall of any facts that they are not automatic in recalling. You may like to create flash cards or skip count aloud with your child to help support their learning with this.
Remembering we are aiming to have learnt all our multiplication facts up to x12 by the end of the year. If your child can recall all of them, they can switch over to their division facts.
Inquiry: Talk with your child about their SMART goal they created in relation to their leadership skills. Regular check ins will help support their growth in this area.
EXHIBITION: Students will complete their fourth journal this week. It is due to be uploaded in Toddle by 5pm Sunday. Students are finalising their focus areas for further inquiry which will be the main research area for exhibition. Mrs Z will be meeting with each student over the next few days of school to work through this with each person. Please discuss this with your child so that you can reflect on their thinking and work through the process of choosing where their interest lies. There is more information on Toddle about this.
Year 6 Graduation: We would like to share a photo gallery of the graduating class on graduation night. We need 2 photos of your child to show how they have grown up into the students we know today. These photos can be emailed to Mrs Zadow (Zadow.jayne@goldengrove.sa.edu.au). Please include a baby photo and first day of school photo. Please have these in by the end of Term 3.
Pong-A-Thon: This Friday the 15th of September.
Students are welcome to dress up as their favourite sports hero, with a gold coin donation.
Book Week:
Book week is in week 5. The dress up parade day is Tuesday the 19th of August.
Current and Upcoming Learning
Reader’s Workshop: Students will continue to focus on stamina reading and reading with expression to support their oral presentation skills.
Writer’s Workshop: Year 5: Students will be focussing on the structure and features of letter writing in preparation for their application for leadership positions.
Year 6: Writing will be associated with Exhibition as needed. Please see class flow.
Mathematics: Students have spent time identifying lines of symmetry, parallel lines and transformations of shape. We have now moved into translations, rotations and reflections and will be creating our own tessellations this week.
Inquiry:
Year 5: This week, students crafted SMART goals—specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound—to support personal growth and leadership development to assist them in their applications for leadership roles next year. We encourage families to remain connected with your child’s goal—simple check-ins like “How are you doing?” or “What’s working well?” make a big difference. Next week we will look outward and inquire to community leaders and role models.
Exhibition: Students are finalising their focus areas for further inquiry which will be the main research area for exhibition. Mrs Z will be meeting with each student over the next few days of school to finalise and frame what this may look like. From here, students will use a lot of the skills they have developed as a learner, to take their understanding further. Also, mentors will be given to either groups or individuals and we will let you know these. Students benefit so much from the conversations at home about what they are doing.
