Earlier this year our Year 3 and Year 5 students participated in The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) and we are proud to share the outstanding achievements of our students at EPS this year.
EPS Students Are Building Their Voice as Readers and Writers
Explicit teaching, rich texts, and purposeful practice are driving strong literacy outcomes.
In Reading, 85% of Year 3 students and 92% of Year 5 students achieved the strong or exceeding bands. In Writing, 91% of Year 3 students and 92% of Year 5 students scored within the strong or exceeding bands, reflecting the exceptional progress and dedication of our learners. These results highlight the effectiveness of our comprehensive English program at EPS.
In Reading the explicit teaching of reading skills and strategies is at the heart of our approach, ensuring students develop the confidence and proficiency they need to succeed. We complement this with reading conferences, which allow teachers to establish personalised reading goals tailored to each student’s needs, and book clubs that enable students to engage in rich and meaningful conversations about the texts they are reading. Our classrooms feature well-stocked libraries filled with rich, diverse literature, providing inspiring texts that nurture curiosity and a love of reading.
In Writing, our approach draws upon the 6+1 Traits of Writing, which guide students in developing key qualities such as ideas, organisation, voice, and conventions. We incorporate quality mentor texts that serve as powerful examples to support students’ learning and creativity. Through explicit instruction in the structure and craft of writing, students build strong foundations and develop their unique writing voices, enabling them to communicate effectively in a variety of genres.
EPS Students Are Thinking, Exploring, and Succeeding in Maths
Strong foundations and purposeful learning are leading to exceptional results.
In 2025, 83% of our Year 3 students and 92% of our Year 5 students achieved strong or exceeding results in Mathematics. These results reflect how our students are building strong foundations, applying efficient strategies, and making connections between their learning and real-life situations.
At EPS, students are expected to think deeply about their mathematical strategies. They explain their reasoning, justify their methods, and learn from the thinking of their peers. Teachers support this through ongoing observations and check-ins, adjusting lessons to target what students need next.
Hands-on materials, visual models, structured discussions, and purposeful questioning help students build number sense and develop confidence in problem-solving. Success isn’t only measured by getting the ‘right’ answer but by understanding the ‘why’ and ‘how’ behind it.
These achievements are a result of our students’ consistent effort, their willingness to take on challenges, and the strong partnerships between teachers and families. Together, we are creating a learning culture where students are thinking, exploring, and succeeding in mathematics.
