5/6 CLASSROOM

English

In English, students have been diving further into Tom Appleby: Convict Boy, enjoying both teacher-led reading and independent reading practice. Their next exciting task is to create an Information Report on Convict Settlement in Australia. They will explore a variety of non-fiction texts to gather facts and plan a clear introduction, detailed body paragraphs, and a strong conclusion.

Throughout this unit, students are also developing important writing skills, including using appositives to add detail, employing subordinating conjunctions to connect ideas, and practicing effective note-taking to support their research.

Maths

In Maths, students have been confidently tackling the challenge of adding and subtracting fractions with both related and unrelated denominators, as well as converting improper fractions into mixed numbers.

They have worked through a range of challenging questions and real-world problems, demonstrating great perseverance and consistently showing their working to clearly explain their thinking. It’s been fantastic to watch their confidence and accuracy improve with every lesson!

Inquiry

This term, students have explored totems, Dreaming stories, and the Indigenous timeline alongside the timeline of colonisation. They examined different accounts of Captain Cook’s journey, discussing why these stories vary and how those differences affect our understanding of history.

Continuing their learning on this theme, students imagined travelling back to the 1700s to interview Captain Cook, creating thoughtful questions they would ask him.

Mary of the Cross MacKillop Feast Day

Well done to all students who took on different roles in our Mary of the Cross MacKillop Feast Day Mass on Friday. Each role was carried out with care and respect, and it was wonderful to see so many students involved in this special celebration for our school community.
