Science

Welcome back to Science! This term we have commenced our new topic, Biology: Exploring Plants and Animals, with wonderful enthusiasm and curiosity!
Students across all year levels have explored the differences between living and non-living things, analysing the characteristics that define something as living including growth, movement, reproduction, ability to take on nutrients and breathe, production of waste and the ability to respond to the environment/stimuli.
Last week we had fun being nature detectives, exploring living things in our school yard. We then compared the features, behaviours and needs of plants and animals.
This week students investigated life cycles of plants and some animals. We all enjoyed making our own grass heads and look forward to observing these grow over the term! Each class is also growing a bean plant - we will observe the process of growth and the plants developing features as the term progresses.
Throughout the term, students will be investigating plant and animal features and adaptations, grouping and classification, as well as the needs and interdependence of living things. Our learning will take place through a range of different methods including explicit instruction, visual aids and clips, reading tasks, group and independent tasks as well as hands on exploration and activities. Each student will also take on an independent project, researching, and later presenting, a plant or animal of their choice!
National Science Week commences tomorrow, running from Saturday 9th August until Saturday 16th August. National Science Week in Australia is an annual event designed to celebrate and promote science and technology, and to encourage greater community engagement with these fields. It's a chance to highlight the contributions of Australian scientists, foster an interest in science pursuits, and inspire young people to explore the wonders of the world.
This year’s theme is Decoding the Universe – Exploring the unknown with nature’s hidden language. Today we launched Science Week with an exciting, informative and highly engaging incursion run by Professor Bunsen. The focus was on Chemistry - solids, liquids and gases. Our students really enjoyed this session! Next week we will be celebrating Science Week with activities including a power point presentation and discussion in Science class centred on this year’s theme, activity rotations in multi age house colour groups next Friday as well as optional fun activities for students during break time towards the end of the week. Looking forward to it!
