Year 5/6

Numeracy
Over the last few weeks, grade 5/6 students have been learning about how to measure and calculate the perimeter and area of compound and simple shapes, including polygons and triangles. We explored this through calculating shapes that have the same area as they do perimeter, as well as calculating shapes that meet a certain criteria (I.e ‘create a rectangle that has an area of 72cm and a perimeter of 34cm’). We even measured the perimeter and area of our uniquely shaped classroom!
From Week 3, we started converting units of measurements, specifically mm, cm, m and km. We practiced converting these units of measurement using our knowledge of decimal numbers, multiplication and division, before participating in a TREASURE HUNT!
Every clue required students to convert a measurement in order to find the next clue, eg. 'The treasure is 1.8 metres away from the closest tree. How many centimetres is that? Look here for your treasure!'. We found our golden treasure under the rotunda!
Literacy
In reading we have started literature circles! Literature circles are small group discussions around a shared novel that encourage active engagement, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of the text. We have examined the different roles that will feature in each literature circle meeting, such as the summariser, questioner and word wizard, and met in our circles to share our reflections of the selected texts thus far. The students are either reading Holes, His Name Was Walter, 48 Hours or That Boy, Jack. We have had some wonderful discussions so far!!
