Learning in Action

Word Work

Students continued exploring the meanings of words derived from the Latin base rect, meaning straight/right and Latin base clude-cluse, meaning close/shut. They built their comprehension by exploring these words in context and participating in jeopardy style games. 

Preview for learning: 

'Tect' meaning to cover and ‘cide-cise’ meaning to cut/strike are the Latin base morphemes we will focus on in the upcoming weeks. 

Literature

These past weeks, students have explored the lifestyle of early settlers and convicts in Australia through the class novel Convict Boy. We discussed the constant issue surrounding food; the perceived food shortage by the Europeans and how this negatively impacted the interactions between the settlers. Also discussed was the racial issues after the negative interactions between the Indigenous Australians and the settlers.

During the sentence level writing, students used their knowledge of appositives to improve their sentences. We revisited the relative pronouns (who, whom, whose, that, which) and relative adverbs (when, why, where) and ensured they were correctly punctuated in their sentence.

Preview for Learning:

Students will expand a simple sentences to make a complex sentence, by adding the details who, when, why and how.

➗ Maths

Students began the units related to measurement. We revised the importance of using the different units of measurement. Students estimated lengths of items and, for accuracy, recorded their answers in two different units of measurement. For example, if the pencil was 20cm long, we could also say that it is 200mm long. We also realised that smaller units of measurement provided more accurate answers.

We moved on to measuring the mass of objects and compared the units of measurement milligrams, grams and kilograms. We determined the best unit of measurement for different items. For example, we would measure a chocolate bar in grams.

Preview for Learning:

To complete the unit on measurement, students will compare and select measurements for capacity and accurately measure the capacity of objects. They will also solve problems involving measurement.

Knowledge Rich

Over the last fortnight, we have continued learning about Australian democracy. We discussed the different perspectives people may have regarding Australia being a democracy, which are shaped by people’s experiences, values and backgrounds. We looked at the perspective of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and different minority groups (like people with disabilities, different ethnic backgrounds). We discussed that there are positives and negatives of having different perspectives, but we can be tolerant and accepting and learn from others.

At the completion of this unit, in pairs, students created a slide answering one of the learning objectives of the unit and presented their work to the class.

Preview for Learning:

We will be beginning our next unit called Medieval Europe. We will be learning about the lords, peasants, castles and the crusades from this era, as well as the Great Fire of London.

Wellbeing

This fortnight began with a Buddies session, where the Grade 5s worked with the Preps to go on a scavenger hunt around the school.

This fortnight concluded with students looking at the human rights of individuals and the rights of Indigenous people. We learnt that human rights are the rights of all human beings regardless of their gender, nationality, ethnicity, language, religion, ability, age or any other status.  This means that everyone should be treated fairly and be free to make important and genuine choices in their lives. These human rights include the right to freedom of opinion and expression, freedom from slavery, torture and discrimination and the right to work and to education.
