Classroom Mastery Update

Amanda Miller

Since the beginning of the school year, we have continued to strengthen our focus on consistent and effective classroom practices. A key priority has been the development of clear and predictable entry and exit routines, supporting students to transition smoothly into and out of learning with purpose and readiness. Staff have been working collaboratively to embed these routines, helping to create calm, focused, and well-structured learning environments across all classrooms.

In addition, our coaching team has been actively reconnecting with staff over the past fortnight to check in on progress and provide ongoing support. These conversations have centered on how well ‘Classroom Mastery’ routines are being implemented and sustained in daily practice. It has been encouraging to see the commitment of staff to refining these approaches, ensuring consistency for students and strengthening our whole-school approach to high-quality teaching and learning.

This work is strongly supported by research from the Australian Education Research Organisation (AERO), which highlights that well-taught routines can significantly increase learning time by reducing disruptions and unnecessary transitions. Studies suggest that clear, explicitly taught routines help students develop automatic behaviours, freeing up working memory so they can better focus on learning. In fact, when routines are consistently practised and reinforced, classrooms experience fewer interruptions and greater student independence, contributing to more productive and engaged learning environments.

It is exciting to see our teachers so positively embracing these routines and approaches, recognising the significant impact they have on student learning and wellbeing. Their commitment to consistency and continuous improvement is making a real difference, and ultimately ensures the best possible outcomes for all of our children.
