Text Studies: Fish is Fish

In our literacy learning, we have been enjoying the story Fish is Fish and learning all about character traits the special qualities that make characters who they are and perspective. We explored words such as brave, curious, stubborn and adaptable, and used these to describe the fish and the frog throughout the story. Students worked hard to explain their thinking, share ideas with partners and write sentences about the characters’ personalities. We also made connections to ourselves by thinking about times we have shown these same character traits in our own lives.

We explored interesting vocabulary words such as triumphantly and feebly, thinking about what they mean and how to use them correctly in sentences. Students made wonderful connections between the characters and themselves by reflecting on times they have shown these same character traits in their own lives. We are becoming more confident readers, thinkers and writers every day!

Literacy Skills - Grouping nouns, common and proper nouns

In our literacy skills, students have been building their understanding of sentences and how they work. We have been learning to identify the parts of a sentence that tell us ‘who’ or ‘what’ and ‘what is happening’, while also exploring nouns, verbs and adjectives.

We also learnt how to expand simple sentences by adding extra information to tell us ‘when’ something happened. Students practised turning short sentences into more detailed ones by adding words such as “in the morning”, “yesterday” or “at night”.

Mathematics - Creating and Continuing Patterns Sequence

In Maths, students have been building confidence with skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s using number charts, games and hands-on activities. We practised counting from non-zero numbers and explored “multiples” while learning how patterns grow and continue. Students enjoyed using coloured number charts, whiteboards and partner discussions to identify and continue skip counting sequences.

We also focused on identifying missing numbers in skip counting patterns. Students used their knowledge of number patterns to work out which numbers were missing and explain their reasoning. Through lots of oral counting, problem-solving and collaborative learning, students are becoming more fluent and confident mathematicians every day!

S.W.P.B.S - School Wide Positive Behaviour

At Cowwarr, we explicitly teach our school values and expected behaviours across all areas of the school. These are reinforced every day and are a dedicated focus during our Wednesday morning wellbeing lessons. To support students’ understanding, we love using stories and real-life examples to help bring our learning to life.
