Learning In My Level Term 2
FOUNDATION
Foundation End of Term 2 Newsletter
It is hard to believe that we are already halfway through the school year! Term 2 has been filled with learning, growth and new experiences, and we are incredibly proud of all that our Foundation students have achieved. As the students have settled into school routines and developed greater confidence and independence, they have continued to build friendships, demonstrate resilience and enthusiasm for learning, and take on new challenges with increasing confidence.
LITERACY
Students have continued to enjoy participating in Little Learners Love Literacy and have now become acquainted with all of Milo Monkey’s friends, culminating in Milo’s surprise birthday celebration. This was a fabulous day full of literacy, including party hats, sharing our toys and letters they start with, pass the parcel, word hunt, Yasmin Yak yoga, Daisy Dog disco dancing, and cupcake eating! It has been wonderful to see the significant growth students have made in their reading and writing skills throughout the term.
MATHS
Foundation students have embraced their Mathematics learning this term. They have particularly enjoyed hands-on activities, collaborative group work, and opportunities to explore mathematical concepts through engaging and practical learning experiences. Among other things, they have been becoming familiar with numbers to 10 and beyond, looking at patterns and making their own, exploring the features of shapes and identifying them in the real world.
INTEGRATED STUDIES
This term, students participated in a range of exciting learning experiences that supported their Integrated Studies learning. Highlights included our excursion to Myuna Farm, and the Rethink, Reuse, Reimagine and Tiddalick the Frog incursions. We also celebrated Reconciliation Week and Sorry Day. These experiences helped students build their understanding of the world around them while developing important social and physical skills.
Students also enjoyed taking part in our Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) this term and whole-school Superhero Day.
We would like to thank our families for their ongoing support throughout the semester. We hope everyone enjoys a well-deserved holiday break, and we look forward to welcoming the students back for another exciting term of learning in Semester 2.
LEVEL 1
Level 1 Learning In My Level
Level 1 has had a very busy Term 2! Students have settled well into routines and continued building solid friendships. We have commemorated ANZAC Day and Sorry Day, as well as participated in National Reconciliation Week activities, a STEM incursion, National Simultaneous Story Time, and our Little Learners Airy Fairy Fair celebration.
Literacy
In Reading, we have continued with the ‘Little Learners Love Literacy’ phonics program – delving into levels 7.2 and 7.3. We have explored a number of digraphs including ar, aw, or, ur, and ir, as well as some diphthongs – where we combine two vowel sounds within one syllable (ow/ou, oi/oy). Thank you again to our parent helpers who have come into the classroom to support students’ reading.
Level 1 also had fun celebrating our literacy learning at the Airy Fairy Fair Celebration. Students enjoyed some ‘silly sports’, as well as ‘art party’ rotations, participating in activities related to the different 7.2 and 7.3 sounds. Several students even showed off their skills to the Grade 1 cohort in a Talent Show, and we ended the day with a movie.
In Writing, we have been improving our recount and narrative writing skills. To start most weeks, students have been writing a recount about their weekend or school events, focusing on features and structure. We’ve also been learning how to ‘bump up’ (or, improve) our narratives, by adding adverbs, adjectives and a more ‘satisfying’ ending. We have spent some time learning about the difference between ‘fragments’ and sentences – where a sentence needs to be a complete idea including a ‘who’ and a ‘what’.
Students continue to develop their skills in Speaking and Listening during ‘Talk Time’. Students have presented to the class about different topics such as holidays, ‘how to’, free choice and describing their STEM project.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, we continue to use a variety of hands-on materials, games and group work to explore different concepts. This term we have had a big focus on Addition and Subtraction. We have also explored mathematical language, patterns, location, and shape.
Wellbeing
In Wellbeing, students are learning how to be safe and respectful in playtime and in the classroom – through learning about their ‘personal bubble’. We have learned about turn-taking, problem solving, help-seeking and equality vs. equity.
Integrated Studies
This term, we had a big focus on building and making through our STEM project – where students built amazing theme park ‘rides’ out of recycled materials. They planned, designed, built and reflected on their rides and presented them to the class through Talk Time. We enjoyed our Hands-On Science incursion, and loved having our parents and special friends visit the classroom during Open Afternoon and even help us with our rides.
Sorry Day and National Reconciliation Week
Through narratives and class discussions, students learnt about the history and importance of Sorry Day, which led into our participation in National Reconciliation Week. The theme for 2026 is ‘all in for reconciliation’, where students made their pledges with their buddies towards reconciliation between indigenous and non-indigenous communities – for example, by supporting the welcome to country, reading books by indigenous authors, being kind and inclusive, and by looking after ‘country’. We were treated to a wonderful incursion in the library with Mrs. Morris, too – learning about Indigenous plants as we sat in a yarning circle.
LEVEL 2
Level 2
Level 2 has had a fantastic Term 2, filled with many rich learning experiences. Students enjoyed our Building and Construction incursion, Mother’s Day Stall, Open Afternoon, Reconciliation Week and an AUSLAN incursion, just to name a few.
Literacy
During Reading sessions, we have been learning how to make inferences and practising the skills needed to understand and comprehend texts at a deeper level. Students have been working on maintaining their reading fluency and stamina, while understanding the importance of choosing ‘Just Right’ books.
We have continued to incorporate explicit phonics teaching into our literacy program using Little Learners Love Literacy resources. Students use decodable readers, whiteboards, and syllabification to learn about the weekly focus sound.
Talk Time has been informative, with students confidently practising their speaking skills as they shared what they did during the holidays, showcased their theme park rides, and taught their peers how to complete a chosen activity.
Numeracy
During Term 2, students developed their understanding of key mathematical concepts through engaging problem-solving and hands-on learning experiences. They strengthened their skills in number, algebra, measurement, geometry, and data while applying mathematical strategies to real-world situations. Students demonstrated growth in reasoning, accuracy, and perseverance as they explored new concepts and consolidated previously learned skills.
Integrated Learning
For our Integrated Learning topic, Make It Move, we started Term 2 with an incursion from Hands on Science. During this workshop, students developed an understanding and appreciation of basic engineering concepts. They explored the properties of different materials and examined the structural strength of different shapes. Students were then able to apply this knowledge to design and build a theme park ride.
We would like to give a massive ‘thank-you’ to all parents and carers for your support. In particular, those who have volunteered their time in the classroom this term, which is greatly appreciated.
Level 2 Team
LEVEL 3
We’ve had a fun and learning filled first semester in Level 3! In Term 2, students have had new exciting experiences through our continued Flora and Fauna program and various incursion and excursion opportunities such as our Swimming Program.
In Maths, we explored and established our strong number facts linking this to multiplication and division skills and thinking. During the week of our open-afternoon, we explored the concept of measurement – focusing on length. We conducted investigations to compare our arm span and height lengths and practiced our data collection and graphing skills. We also explored the properties of 3D objects with hands on construction.
Our Reading lessons have been full of rich discussions and explorations as we conducted our first Novel Study on the text ‘How to be Prime Minister and Survive Grade 5’. Our Novel Study has been a major highlight as we explored how and why texts are targeted for certain audiences, built our comprehension through literal and inferential questioning, and represented our thinking through visualisation and summarisation.
In Writing, we have engaged in an exciting narrative unit of study for the term focusing on our ‘Tree Stories’. In the first week of Term 2 – students wrote a draft narrative focused on the prompt ‘The Tree’. Throughout the term, students have worked to explore how to create structure, implement effective dialogue and punctuation, and build tension and imagery in their stories. Students practised a focus skill and then applied this to improve their original piece into a brand new or ‘glow up’ verison.
Our Integrated Studies has brought engaging and strong real-world connections into our classrooms this term. Particularly with our ‘Democracy, Community and Me’ Incursion where students participated in a mock parliamentary vote as well as a council meeting. Students gained a deep understanding of the key stakeholders within communities and how decisions are made in a democracy/community. To encompass our learning – students are finishing the term working in teams to design their own ‘communities’, deciding on the rules, laws and places within these and displaying this with 2D and 3D features.
We continue to be so proud of how the Grade 3 students have taken leaps and bounds in their learning and growth this Term 2. They have displayed collaboration skills, perseverance to engage in new learning experiences, and deepening their connections along the way. Bring on Term 3!
LEVEL 4
Level 4 End of Term Newsletter
As we reach the end of a busy and successful term, the Level 4 students should be proud of their learning, growth and achievements across all curriculum areas.
Through reading activities, students developed their ability to identify text structures, infer meaning and apply strategies to ask questions about texts, discuss how authors use language and images to engage audiences. Students worked in small groups to complete comprehension activities in their CARS books. In writing, students planned, drafted and published well-structured texts, focusing on developing ideas centred around a tree, selecting precise vocabulary, and editing and revising their work for clarity and accuracy.
Students then published their narratives using computers to produce a refined, final piece of writing. Students also shared their learning through collaborative class discussions and learning tasks.
Students continued to strengthen their number knowledge by exploring place value, multiplication and division strategies, and addition and subtraction. They applied mathematical thinking to solve real-world problems involving measurement and data. Students demonstrated increasing confidence in selecting efficient strategies and explaining their mathematical reasoning. They also collected, represented and interpreted data using a variety of graphs and displays.
Wellbeing has remained an important focus throughout the term. Students explored personal strengths, resilience and strategies for managing emotions in a range of social situations. Through class discussions and cooperative learning experiences, they developed their understanding of positive relationships, respectful communication and the value of diverse perspectives. Students have shown increasing confidence in working collaboratively, resolving conflicts and supporting one another.
Our integrated inquiry unit focused on Australian democracy. Students investigated the key features of democracy, democratic values and how decisions are made within communities. They explored the role of local government, examined the importance of rules and laws, and considered how citizens can actively participate in their communities. Students have developed a deeper understanding of how democracy shapes everyday life in Australia.
We congratulate all Level 4 students on their enthusiasm, perseverance and commitment to learning throughout the term. We wish everyone a safe, restful and enjoyable break and look forward to another exciting term ahead.
Kind regards,
The Level 4 Team 😊
LEVEL 5
Term 2 has come to a fantastic close, marking the end of a highly successful first semester for our Level 5 students. They have fully settled into the rhythm of upper primary, approaching their learning with immense independence and enthusiasm. Throughout the term, students showed great responsibility during key events, including our school open afternoon, Student-Led Conferences, Buddy sessions and a fun-filled whole-school Superhero Day.
Our students stayed highly active this term, developing their teamwork and sportsmanship through weekly interschool sports and two major Winter Interschool Sports Days. They also showed great maturity when observing important community milestones, including ANZAC Day, Sorry Day, and National Reconciliation Week. To round out their community awareness, students participated in an insightful health session with Life Education and learned vital emergency safety protocols during a special incursion with the SES.
In Literacy, students expanded their reading comprehension by moving through advanced strategies, including questioning, inferring, determining importance, and synthesising. They also collaborated closely during peer-led Literacy Circles. In Writing, the focus shifted across multiple text types as students planned, drafted, and edited narrative pieces, information reports, and explanation texts. This was supported by grammar lessons targeting word classes, phrases, and sentence structures, ranging from basic FANBOYS coordination to complex sentences. Finally, Word Work sessions targeting the -ough, igh, and -age sounds, alongside affixes like inter-, trans-, im-, fore-, co-, and en-, helped students build their spelling accuracy and vocabulary.
The Mathematics curriculum balanced core number operations with practical, real-world measurement skills. Students spent the first half of the term strengthening their mental and written strategies for multiplication and division. In the latter half of the term, the focus shifted toward geometry and time. Students learned to identify, measure, and draw different types of angles, before moving on to calculating elapsed time and reading complex timetables.
Our Integrated Studies units took a fascinating journey through geography and Earth science. Students began by identifying the continents of the world, comparing the human and physical features of different countries, and taking a closer look at the Asia-Pacific region. This geographic knowledge laid the foundation for our deep dive into natural disasters, where students investigated the science behind earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, droughts, and bushfires. A major highlight was our excursion to the Melbourne Museum and IMAX Theatre, which brought these concepts to life. Back at school, students loved applying their knowledge by constructing and erupting their own working model volcano to see tectonic forces in action.
As we look ahead to Term 3, we are excited to see our Level 5 students return refreshed and ready for another semester of growth, discovery, and new learning adventures. The third term always brings fantastic opportunities for students to further stretch their independence, take on new academic challenges, and continue developing into the confident leaders of our school community. We want to thank all of our wonderful families for your ongoing support throughout the first half of the year, and we wish everyone a safe, relaxing, and happy winter school holiday break!
