Year 3/4 Classrooms

Welcome back to Term 2!

We have been so impressed with the students’ smooth transition back to learning and their enthusiasm for deepening their understanding across all learning areas.

In Literacy, across both the English and Spanish classrooms, students have been exploring informative texts while building their knowledge of Australian geography. We have been using the well-known and much-loved book 'Are We There Yet?' by Alison Lester to guide us around Australia, stopping at many iconic places and landmarks along the way.

In Spanish Literacy, students have explored Australian landmarks and geography, developing vocabulary to describe significant places and identify different climate types across Australia. In Grammar, they have been learning to correctly use definite and indefinite articles (el, la, los, las, un, una, unos, unas) to support accurate sentence construction. In Writing, students have begun drafting their informative texts, focusing on writing their first structured paragraph about an Australian landmark.

We hope students have been coming home talking about our local geography, including the Merri Creek and the history of the Kodak Factory. In English, they have been investigating Australia’s neighbouring countries and using compass directions to describe where they are located in relation to the centre of Australia. Students have been working on an informative letter to send home. They have been learning about our state, city, streets, and how to correctly address a letter so it reaches its destination. We hope you enjoy reading them when they arrive!

In Mathematics, students have started exploring fractions. In both English and Spanish, they have been investigating area models, linear fractions, and collections to build a strong understanding of fraction concepts. Next week, students will begin their first Tier 2 unit for the year. They will be working in different classrooms to focus on addition and subtraction concepts, skills, and strategies, building on their learning from Term 1.

Camp is still a very exciting topic of conversation! We have been discussing what our days and nights at camp might look and feel like. Students have started rehearsing their talents for the talent show and have been excitedly talking about which horse they might ride.

Reminders

  • Homework: Term 2 homework was sent home last week. Students are encouraged to regularly practise their reading, writing, maths, and wellbeing activities at home. Homework books are due back on Thursday 7th May.
  • Lost Property: Our lost property boxes are already overflowing with jumpers, drink bottles, and lunch boxes without names on them. We would love to be able return these items to their owners - please label all belongings.
  • Specialist Days: Tuesday and Wednesday are our specialist days. Please check your teacher’s specific timetable to see which sessions your child has on these days.

Kind regards, Grade 3/4 Team
