Cross Country Try outs – Years 3 to 6

Next week, students in Years 3 to 6 will take part in our Cross Country try outs during their Physical Education lessons. This is an exciting opportunity for students to challenge themselves, build endurance and represent our school in an important sporting event, aligned with our focus on active participation and wellbeing in the Victorian Curriculum.
During the tryouts, students aged 9–10 will run 2km, while students aged 11–13 will complete a 3km course inside the school.
Students will compete within three age groups:
- 9–10 years,
- 11 years, and
12–13 years.
Each age group will be divided into boys and girls categories. Students who identify as non-binary are invited to speak with me before the tryouts to choose the category in which they feel most comfortable participating.
From each category, up to 7 students will be selected to represent Newlands Primary School at the Cross Country District event. This will take place on Monday 19 May at the Harold Stevens Athletic Track.
The list of students who qualify for the District event will be published during week 4 on the gym window.
In the lead-up to the tryouts, spending a bit of time being active together as a family, such as going for a light jog or walk, can be a great way to help students gradually build stamina and confidence.
We look forward to seeing students give their best effort, demonstrate resilience and support one another throughout the tryouts.
