SSV Football Triumph

On August 16 the Year 5/6 boys footy team headed out to Port Melbourne for the State Victoria Football Championships. Competing in these were the 8 best sides from the whole state, with the opposition teams being Mildura, Warrnambool, Wangaratta, Maffra, Ocean Grove, Yarrambat and Mount Scopus.

Our first game was against Yarrambat Primary, who were coached by AFL legend Boomer Harvey and they came out very strong. We didn’t get our game going, but managed to sneak a goal into the wind and came into half time down by a point. The second half was an arm wrestle but we managed to do just enough and came away with a one point. This was far too close for comfort and we knew that there was going to have to be a lift in performance to progress throughout the day.

Second up we had Wangaratta and the boys came out of the blocks fast. We kicked some early goals and controlled the game which made for a more relaxing and encouraging performance for players and fans. It was a great game from our boys and it set us up to follow on to the third game, which ultimately would decide whether we progressed to the grand final or not.

Warrnambool were a good side and they came out really well, surprising us with their clean skills and running ability. We came into half time down by 14 points and we were scratching our heads on how we could make adjustments to run over them. The boys were firing early, kicking a quick goal and starting to control the football all around the ground. About 10 minutes into the quarter Max Elliot got the ball running towards the boundary and kicked it across his body for a goal of the year contender, which we then followed with another goal to go ahead by 4 points. While working hard to keep this lead, Warrnambool pushed forward and it was a 2 on 1, with Kian Perrett being the 1 coming to the rescue with a vital match saving mark, whilst getting sandwiched in the process. The siren went and the boys celebrated accordingly, with a lot of hugs and fist pumping as we had now claimed a spot in the grand final.

We were faced with Star of the Sea Ocean Grove, who had also beaten all before them. Ocean Grove won the toss and really capitalised on this kicked multiple goals and from there it was an uphill battle. We managed to go 2 goals each in the second half but the damage was done early, with Ocean Grove coming out state champions. It was a strange feeling after the game as the boys were disappointed to lose the grand final, but also the realisation that we had come second in the state which was an enormous feat and something to be really proud of lifted the boys spirits.

Every one of the boys represented the school with distinction and also a shout out to the huge support we had from the parent group, who also made our jobs as players and coaches a lot easier knowing that we had such a strong backing from everyone who came down or cheered on from work/home. As coaches, myself and Mr Ross are really proud of the boys and it was a pleasure to be involved with such a good group of young men who worked together and achieved something really special for Beauy North.

House Athletics 2023

On Thursday 17 August the year 4-6 students and staff headed down to the Sandy Aths track for yet another year of hurdling, jumping, throwing, endurance running and sprinting.

Every student had the experience of running a 100m, 200m and 800m race, throwing a shot put and discus, having contests to throw the vortex as far as possible and long jumping into the pit as well as trying hard to Hop, Step and Jump! There were plenty of smiles as we handed out many, many ribbons and lots of resilience for those who didn’t quite get a ribbon. Everyone tried their best and had FUN.

To begin the day we had all our hurdle finalists compete in front of all the staff and students which is always a good start to the carnival and to finish the day we had a Staff vs House captains relay race.

The staff team in order of start to finish- Ms Grant (baton starter), to pass to Bonnie (from the library)  to Mrs Hall who ran the curve and part of the back straight to hand to Mr Ross who sprinted so fast no one saw him, passing to Mr Farmer who did the top curve of the track in explosive form and a quick baton change to our fastest staff member on record- Mr Marashli who sprinted the home straight like a professional runner…

Thanks to all the staff who helped out for the day to make it an enjoyable and happy experience for all students not just the sporty ones.

Those students who were the best across their year levels will now progress to the District Athletics carnival at Duncan McKinnon on Tuesday 12th September. This year we have a team of 70 students who will represent BNPS at this event. Congratulations to all those students.

Girls Netball Team

The Girls Netball team this year did a tremendous job in making it to the Regional Championships in Pakenham on Friday 18 August.

Our first match was against St Colombus in Elwood, and they were quick off the mark and had a very tall GS who dominated the game making it hard for our girls to defend. WE lost that game by 3 goals. Next we were up against -Benton Junior College who were quick off the mark and rattled us for a bit before we found our flow only going down by 1 goal. Our last match against Casey Fields PS we dominated and won easily by 12 goals. Unfortunately for us the two teams in our pool that beat us were the two strongest teams in the competition and ended up playing off against each other in the Grand Final.

A great effort by the girls and although we lost we still had SLURPEES at the end of the day and I think that was the winner for everyone😊

The girls in the team were- Claudia M, Pippa S, Eliza N, Amber B, Georgia D, Mia K, Averie L, Georgia B, Annabelle C, Mia L and Maddie T.

Super proud of all the girls!

A special thank you to Claire Nicholls who came to support at the Regionals and was our official team scorer for the day. Also to Tim Stickland who scored for us at the Division champs – thanks.

To all the other parents who came along to encourage and watch the girls play- much appreciated and welcomed.

Coach- Mrs Hall
