Accreditation for Christian Studies Teachers

Teachers of Christian Studies in a Lutheran school, Christian Studies teachers need to attain Accreditation as a Christian Studies teacher (Ac) status as required by the Lutheran Church of Australia. Accreditation involves participation in the Connect and Equip programs.

Enhancing Academic Integrity: A Shared Commitment in the world of AI

Education in the 21st century brings with it many challenges and opportunities. This year has witnessed a significant leap of generative AI into our society, and earlier this year schools had to react quickly when the AI-driven text generation tool, ChatGPT, gathered attention for its ability to compose essays, write reports and produce accurate answers to VCE exam questions.

While the proliferation of AI may bring concerns about its potential misuse, the reality is that technologies such as ChatGPT are here to stay. In the future, AI technology will no doubt become part of our everyday lives—like spell checkers, translation software and calculators.

In responding to AI, we have consulted authorities such as the IB, the Victorian government and independent and government schools around the nation to formulate our approach. Experts emphasise a balanced approach, encouraging educational institutions to integrate AI tools like ChatGPT to enhance critical thinking and creativity, while at the same time maintaining vigilance against potential misuse.

At Good News Lutheran College, teachers are learning about AI in order to enhance learning outcomes for our students. We are reviewing our Academic Integrity Policy to incorporate AI and we plan to share information about this with our parents and students in coming weeks. However, at its heart, our attitude to AI is this: rather than banning AI completely, teachers will specify tasks where AI usage is appropriate and how it can be used (with appropriate referencing) alongside tasks where AI should not be used at all.

By doing so, our aim is to empower students with skills needed to navigate the intricate landscape of AI, preparing them to make informed decisions that align with ethical considerations and societal needs. This is a brave new world of AI we are entering into, and our hope is that through quality education, together we can ensure our children are not only well prepared for this new world, but they can enter it with character and integrity.
