Let your light shine!

Have you ever experienced a blackout? What is one of the first things you reach for? Perhaps a source of light to illuminate your room… Suddenly the darkness disappears and it is easy to avoid those tripping hazards. You feel safe, comforted and aware of your surroundings.

So, there is something counter intuitive or strange about having a light source and then covering it up so no light escapes. You are right back to where you started, sitting still in darkness. Jesus had something to say about this in Matthew 5:14-16 (NLT)

“You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house.  In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”

Jesus himself is known as the ‘Light of the world’. Not only did he break into the darkness through his death and resurrection, he shone light and hope wherever he went through his words and actions. He encouraged others, telling them they were loved, valued and precious. And he had quite the impact! Lives were changed… People had stories to share. In turn they became light bearers, through their words and actions, influencing those they came in contact with in positive, life-giving ways.

That light reaches us today! We, in turn, can be light bearers to the people in our Good Shepherd community, in our homes, our sporting clubs, our neighbourhoods even!

Who might you help or encourage today? You never know exactly how much it might be needed and how it could brighten their day!
