Term 2 Preview:

Exploring the World of Digital Systems and Coding

This term, our students are stepping into the role of creators and problem-solvers as we dive into our new unit on Digital Systems, Coding, and Finding Solutions. In an increasingly tech-driven world, we want to move our students beyond being just "users" of technology and help them understand how these systems actually work.

What are we learning?

Our focus this term is split into three key areas:

  • Digital Systems: Students will explore the "under the hood" of technology. This includes understanding hardware (the physical parts), software (the programs), and how they communicate with each other to perform tasks.
  • The Language of Coding: We are introducing the fundamentals of programming. Through age-appropriate platforms such as BeeBots, Indibots and Microbits, students will learn how to give precise instructions to a computer or bot to create animations, games, or simple sequences.
  • Finding Solutions: At its heart, coding is about logic and resilience. Students will be presented with "unplugged" and digital challenges, encouraging them to break down complex problems into smaller steps—a skill known as computational thinking.

Why it matters

While not every student will grow up to be a software engineer, the skills they develop in this unit are universal. Learning to code fosters critical thinking, patience through debugging, and collaborative teamwork. It teaches students that mistakes are simply "bugs" that provide an opportunity to learn and try a different approach.

How you can help at home

You don’t need to be a tech expert to support your child’s learning! You can:

  • Ask questions: "How did you get that character to move?" or "What happens if that part of the code is missing?"
  • Spot the systems: Point out digital systems in daily life, like how a microwave knows when to stop or how a traffic light changes.
  • Encourage "The Struggle": If they get stuck on a logic puzzle or a game, encourage them to find a different path rather than giving the answer.

We are looking forward to a term full of "Aha!" moments and creative breakthroughs. Keep an eye out for some of the digital projects your children will be bringing to life over the coming weeks!
