International Day of People with Disability
International Day of People with Disability is a United Nations (UN) day observed internationally. It aims to promote community awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability.
Each year the UN announces a theme to observe for International Day of People with Disability. The annual theme provides an overarching focus on how society can strive for inclusivity through the removal of physical, technological and attitudinal barriers for people with disability. This has been occurring since 1992 when the General Assembly announced December 3rd as the International Day of Disabled Persons. This year, the theme is: Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future.
Fittingly, our Willy Kids focus this fortnight has been leadership, with the overarching idea that anyone is capable of being a leader. Leadership at Williamstown Primary means many different things, from leading by example, leading a classroom activity, to leading a team. Seeing all the wonderful differences in our leaders shows our school community that striving to be a leader doesn’t have limitations, and leadership is not achieved by only one type of person.
We pride ourselves on creating an inclusive environment for our Willy Kids, where all children can thrive, achieve and build positive and lasting relationships. Whether a child is neurodiverse, neurotypical, has a physical disability or a specific learning challenge, there is a leadership opportunity for everyone. As we get ready to celebrate a wonderful year, many of our Willy Kids are already looking towards 2025 and what they can do to lead the way.
As a school, we recognise and celebrate the people in our community who are working hard to ensure equitable collaboration where everyone’s voices are heard. To find out more about the International Day of People with Disability go to: https://www.idpwd.com.au/
