Fortnightly Curriculum Focus
Literacy: In Reading, Year 4 students are continuing to develop different techniques to comprehend texts. These techniques involve visualising, understanding that the choice of specific vocabulary is crucial to understanding what and where events are taking place in a text. These skills are supporting students' understanding in our class novel, ‘The One and Only Ivan’ written by Katherine Applegate. Students are also looking into Fairytales, traditional and fractured to support these skills. Transferring this knowledge into our Writing unit. In Writing, students have been working in groups to start the highly anticipated Stop Motion Project. Students are exploring different characters and story lines through handmade clay characters or Lego to create their own twist on a fairytale. Students are forming scripts and creating their materials for this unit to start filming over the coming weeks.
Numeracy: In Numeracy, Year 4 students have concluded their Measurement and Geometry unit and are reviewing previous key concepts over the coming weeks. Over the last weeks we have had a focus on multiplication and number patterns. Students have been asked to follow a pattern or sequence following a rule, using worded problems and real life examples where this skill is applied. They are also using online programs such as Essential Assessment to reinforce skills and target specific individual goals.
Inquiry: Over the last few weeks students have finished a mini presentation about Space, looking into the explorations and missions involved. Students working in groups picked a mission and explored why this mission occurred and what was discovered from this. They then got to present this to their peers in the classroom. Students are also starting a new and final project for our unit this term, focusing on their understanding of the Moon, Sun and Earth. Students are also working in groups for this task, applying their knowledge learnt over the term to create a presentation that will be shared with the class.
Willy Kids: Our fortnightly focus has been: "Willy Kids are Leaders." Students this fortnight have reflected on what a leader is. Transitioning into ⅚ next year students are reflecting on what qualities make them a leader and how to be a leader for junior Willy Kids. Students worked in groups to create a scenario that best shows their leadership qualities and shared them with the class.
Respectful Relationships: This term we are learning about stress management. We have focused on the following subtopics
