Year 5 Bike Education
For the first week of Bike Ed, we practised signalling and brakes. We had to go down the ramp in a straight line and everyone was having trouble going down the ramp and it was also hard turning while riding. In week 2, we went on the oval and we also learned that it is easy to ride on grass in a lower gear. We also rode on a hill and we went down it and no one fell off their bike. Then everyone was riding their bikes around the oval for the session.
In week 3, the instructors made a tiny town on the courts, out of cones, chalk, and fake props. This was the last week riding on school grounds. The whole point of the tiny town was to learn the rules of the roads, so we had to cross intersections, learn to signal at the correct times, and to be careful of each other. While this was happening, the instructors set up a tiny town jail for all the kids that don't follow the road rules, whether that's not signalling when they need to, or signal when they are not meant the whole group did perfectly and not many people ended up in jail.
In the last week, all the group had a really fun time on the road. We learnt all about the rules of the road and how to be safe on the roads. We also learnt how to position ourselves on the road. The first thing we learnt though is what to do at an intersection, and the next lesson we learnt what to do at a roundabout. In the first lesson on the road, we learnt that we should look both ways before we go, we learnt that we need to look back, and how to signal. In the next lesson, we also learned how to position ourselves in roundabouts, what to do if there are other cars or bikes at the roundabout, we also learnt that if we’re going straight we don’t signal. The main aim was for most of us to have fun, but we all did well and have learnt so much through Bike Ed.
