Year 3

Hello families and friends!

It is Week 6 and we are over half way through the term and we have been having fun in year 3 with our learning!

Reading and Writing

For the term we have been looking at persuasives. We have been exploring different persuasive text types in our reading lessons and applying it in our writing. Students have chosen a topic of interest and have been researching about it to persuade the reader to agree with their thinking. For example: Mobile phones should be cheaper!

Mathematics

For non number we have been looking at data, students have been surveying and putting their data into frequency tables, picture graphs and column graphs, then making observations about the data. In our number unit we have been looking at Australian money.

In week 3 we were lucky enough to have some army officials come to the school to let the students take a look inside their vehicles, they were super excited.

We are proud of all our students' efforts, positive mindsets and look forward to acknowledging and celebrating their accomplishments with them throughout these units.

Year 4

The Year 4 students have been continuing their learning during the last term of the year. We have been enjoying the sunny weather and are looking forward to Golden Valleys Camp.

In English we have been enjoying the class novel, The Boy at the Back of the Class.

Students are continuing to enjoy their own books independently during each reading session, with books such as Dogman, Captain Underpants, Alex Rider, Billie B Brown, Owly and Super Side Kicks, popular titles. Keep up your home reading habits by remembering to spend some time each day reading with loved ones. We have developed our persuasive text writing skills and presented debates as teams. These were very engaging to watch, as an affirmative team and negative team presented their arguments.

In Maths we have been exploring the order of operations and continuing to develop efficient strategies for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Try the game of ROWCO at home to practise adding and subtracting numbers mentally. You will need a deck of cards and the link below contains the instructions.

In Humanities we are starting to learn about the history of storytelling, from oral retellings to book production and movie making.

In Health we are continuing to discuss ways to be inclusive of others and share strategies on how to remain safe when using technology.

In Science we have been making discoveries about chemical reactions and observing the results of our experiments. The photos show the ‘Elephant’s Toothpaste’ experiment. We are looking forward to making a geyser in an upcoming experiment!

Year 5

In Year 5, we’re having lots of fun exploring the movie Luca in our Reading unit! This story, set in a colourful seaside town, follows Luca and his friends as they learn about friendship, bravery, and being true to themselves. We’ll be summarising key parts of the movie, making connections to our own lives, and analysing how the characters grow and change throughout the story.

Similarly, in Writing, we have been learning how to write film reviews as part of our film study unit. We’re focusing on how to give our opinion, to make evaluations and judgements, and how to summarise texts. This unit helps us understand how to share our thoughts clearly and creatively, while also learning how to analyse the important parts of a film. It’s a fun way to use our writing skills to talk about the movies we love.

In Maths, we have recently been learning about money and financial maths. The Year 5s have been practising how to make smart choices when handling money, like adding up costs, working out change, understanding best buys and calculating discounts. We’ve also been exploring how to budget and plan for spending, helping us make sense of real-life situations like shopping or saving for something special. In conjunction, we have also been learning all about angles. This includes naming and identifying angles, measuring the degrees of angles as well as exploring their properties.

In Science, we’ve been learning about animal adaptations and how animals change in order to survive in their environments. The Year 5s have explored different ways animals adapt, such as behavioural, physiological and structural adaptations.

In Health, we’ve been focusing on nutrition and learning about the importance of eating a balanced diet to stay healthy and strong. We’ve explored the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating and have even created our own healthy breakfast recipes!

Finally, in Humanities, the Year 5s have dived into the world of economics and business. We have learned about topics such as needs and wants, goods and services, resources and the different types of businesses that exist. We will continue to investigate target audiences and strategic business plans.

We are so excited for the last few weeks of this year!

Kind regards,

Year 6

We have one term left of primary school now and we cannot wait! We are so excited for graduation!

In Reading, we have been looking at the ethos, pathos and logos used in persuasive texts. We have been exploring a range of persuasive speeches and texts to identify the tone, audience, and purpose so we understand the author’s intentions!

In Writing, we have been creating our own persuasive speeches for our passion projects. This means we got to choose our favourite issue (electric cars, AI use in schools, homelessness etc.) and write an engaging speech convincing our audience to side with our point of view. We have been experimenting with different persuasive devices and signposts to ensure we create an engaging piece of work on our iPads! Check out some of speeches we wrote!

In Maths, we have begun learning about Algebra to help prepare us for secondary school! We have been looking at balancing equations and writing algebraic expressions using letters to represent unknown numbers. We have also just started our probability unit, and we just cannot wait to start those maths chance experiments!

In Science, we have been looking at matter! Yesterday we conducted an experiment using solvents and solutes to make solutions! We even wrote up a scientific report to discuss our findings.

We can’t forget all the fun we had with our buddies in SMP and in our classrooms this term. We are going to miss our time with them next year!

Thanks for listening!
