Anaphylaxis and Asthma

Asthma, Allergies, Anaphylaxis

Asthma and allergies are closely linked. Most people with Asthma have Allergic Asthma.

The most common type of allergy that overlaps with Asthma is Allergic Rhinitis – also known as hay fever.

About 80% of people with Asthma also have hay fever. Both create sensitivity in your airways. Asthma creates sensitive lungs, while hay fever is in the nose. Your nose and lungs are connected, so hay fever can trigger your Asthma.

Asthma Australia currently is urging people with hay fever to take thunderstorm activity seriously. Familiarise yourself with their website for advice and up to date warnings.

ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis.

This plan outlines what to do if your child is having an allergic reaction. It must be completed and signed by your child’s doctor and stored with the adrenaline autoinjector, even if it is carried by your child. The plan includes personal details, signs of allergic reactions, instructions on how to use the device and whether to give any other medications.

NOTE: At the commencement of each school year, the school is required to have a new updated Action plan. If at all throughout the year your child develops an allergy with Anaphylaxis we need to be informed and provided with an action plan.

What is the role of the parent?

o Notify school if your child has been prescribed an Adrenaline Autoinjector; had previous or subsequent Anaphylaxis; has any changes in allergies; and any other health care needs or disabilities (including learning difficulties) that may affect Anaphylaxis management.

o Provide an ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis completed and signed by your child’s treating medical practitioner. This should be updated (including photo) when adrenaline autoinjector prescriptions are renewed or if allergies change.

o Provide an Adrenaline Autoinjector to your child’s school, preschool or childcare. Always note the date on the label and replace the device before it expires.
