Foundation / Year 1
KABOOM
On Wednesday morning the F/1/2 students enjoyed a session of fun sports activities ran by Kaboom Kid Sports. We were fortunate to collaborate with other local schools for an event that the junior students loved! Thank you to the Grade 6 helpers that supported the younger students on the day.
“It was so fun! We got to play lots of games and do different activities” - Alice & Harper
“I liked doing the activities and having fun” - Evie
“I liked throwing the bean bags into the hoops” - Molly & Raphael
“It was fun doing circus activities like the spinning plates” - Stanley
“It was so good! There were no lines, and you just got to do what activities you wanted to do” - Hope
“It was so super good! There were fun activities, music and funny stuff” - Addison
Maths – Time
In the F/1 classroom students have been learning about time. Students looked at different elements to an analogue clock such as the different hands - noticing they move at different speeds, and the numbers that are on the clock. Students were able to make their own clock and experimented with moving the hands to make different times. Students have been introduced to o’clock and half past times.
Year 2
KABOOM
On Wednesday the F-2 students walked down to the Rochester Secondary College to have some fun! Thank you to Garry and Larry from Kaboom for running such an energetic session for our schools. It was wonderful to enjoy the space with Rochester PS, Colbinabbin PS and Nanneella PS. Our Year 6 leaders were great role models, encouraging their group around each station. Some of our favourite activities were the flying fruit & the circus skills.
Literacy – Text-Based Unit
We have been working with the text ‘Ella and the Ocean’ by Lian Tanner as our first text-based unit for Term 4. We have really enjoyed unpacking this text together. We have learnt lots of background information about different environments, drought and farming families. We have extended our knowledge with new vocabulary from the text, answered comprehension questions about the story, made connections to the text from our own life experiences, as well as other texts we have read. We have also learnt synonyms related to the characters from the text, compared the features of a fiction text to a non-fiction text, and finally, each student had the opportunity to write their own book report.
Year 3/4
Literacy
Our first Text Based Unit text is 'Rosy’s Journey'. Rosy’s Journey is a short story by Louisa May Alcott, author of Little Women. It is an allegory about the importance of kindness, centering on a young girl who searches for her father, who is away at the goldfields. An allegory is a story with a deeper or hidden meaning, often using symbols to represent moral lessons. We will explore various examples of allegory throughout the unit.
After reading 'Rosy's Journey', the students concentrated on Rosy's experiences with the lion and how she engaged her senses. They then crafted a diary entry from Rosy's perspective, incorporating prepositional phrases to enhance their descriptions. (Prepositions indicate location, e.g. "The mouse traveled on top of the lion’s back.")
Maths
We have been busy estimating the length and area of similar objects in our classroom and also making comparative judgements with different units of measurements. We have measured and calculated the length and area of various shapes, applying these skills in practical, real-world scenarios.
We GOTCHA THIS...
34 CS recognised their amazing Gotcha count with a 'dress as a class colour' and 'design a learning block' on Thursday! It goes without saying they were very excited and super proud of their achievements. They have all been working hard being safe, respectful and responsible when using their devices, working independently, returning homework, saying good morning, walking around the corridors, and challenging themselves with some difficult tasks - these are just a few of the ways we have acknowledged their amazing work.
Year 5/6
Text-Based Unit
We’ve just finished writing about Arctic foxes, and now we’re learning how to write an informative piece on penguins! Our process begins by brainstorming questions we want to answer, like “What do they eat?” Then, we dive into research, highlighting key information and taking notes. This helps us gather facts before we write our piece in our own words. Through this process, we're improving our skills in organising information and communicating what we've learned!
Enjoy reading some of our paragraphs about Arctic foxes.
Getting Creative
Miss Eades' class has crafted some amazing 3D Jabberwocky models for the upcoming art show! They thoroughly enjoyed sketching their designs before moving on to the construction phase. The only requirement was to keep in mind the line: “Beware the Jabberwock, my son! The jaws that bite, the teeth that catch.”
Inquiry - the newest and greatest in entrepreneurial futures for these students
Both 5/6 classes have been hard at work preparing for the upcoming "Bizarre Bazaar" market day on 2nd December. Each inquiry session is filled with baking, painting, drawing, gluing, and funneling. We can't wait for you to see what we've made! Students have been fully engaged in designing and refining prototypes of their unique products, while also exploring the importance of effective promotion to attract interest. This hands-on experience is giving them valuable insights into planning, creativity, and marketing—skills that will make this event truly special. We’re looking forward to seeing their efforts come to life!
Students have also been busy working on signs for the residents who will be returning to REDHS:
