Year Two
Dear Year Two Community,
Wow! Can you believe that the year has come to an end and what a year it has been. New friendships were made, adventures were had and memories were created.
Reading:
In Reading, students have been actively applying their known reading strategies through a variety of practice activities, including Naplan-style questions, which have helped to refine their comprehension and critical thinking skills. They have also focused on building their reading stamina, engaging with increasingly complex texts to strengthen their endurance and focus. This process has not only enhanced their ability to tackle longer reading passages but has also supported the development of key skills such as fluency, expression, and analytical thinking. Through consistent practice, students are gaining confidence in their reading abilities and becoming more independent and strategic readers. Students have engaged in Readers Theatre withe their peers. This has allowed them to build their confidence, stamina and cooperation skills.
Writing:
In Writing, students have been working on crafting engaging narratives that include a problem inspired by the natural disaster they researched for their information reports in our Unit of Inquiry. Building on their understanding of these disasters, they developed creative stories where characters faced challenges such as surviving a flood, escaping a bushfire, or preparing for an earthquake.
Students used their knowledge of the disaster's causes, impacts, and responses to create realistic and compelling problems within their stories. They focused on structuring their narratives with a clear beginning, middle, and end, incorporating descriptive language and dialogue to bring their characters and events to life.
This activity not only strengthened their narrative writing skills but also deepened their understanding of how disasters affect individuals and communities, tying together their learning in a meaningful way.
Students spent time writing letters to their Year 3 Teachers to introduce and to share some facts about themselves.
Maths: As we wrapped up the term this past few weeks, our Year 2 mathematicians have been actively engaged in developing their financial literacy by learning about Australian coins and notes. Students practiced making specific amounts of money using various coin combinations, deepening their understanding of equivalence and value.
Students also used addition and subtraction skills to solve shopping problems. They acted as shoppers, selecting multiple items, calculating the total cost, and determining the correct change.
These hands-on activities made the learning engaging and meaningful, helping students apply their maths skills in real-world contexts. It was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they tackled increasingly complex problems and supported one another in finding solutions. Students explored transformations in mathematics, including symmetry and enlargement.
To bring transformations to life, students manipulated shapes to create pictures, exploring how objects can move and change positions while maintaining their integrity.
We were excited to end the term with such creative and hands-on learning experiences that celebrated our students’ hard work throughout the year!
Inquiry:
In week 9, students finished our final Unit of Inquiry in style with a mini exhibition. Students chose a disaster to inquire into and began their project. The cohort enjoyed this Unit of Inquiry because they were able to combine their knowledge and work at school alongside their families to create their masterpiece. Students were very excited to show their learning and all of their achievements to their loved ones at our mini exhibition.
Christmas Carols:
On Monday the 9th and Tuesday the 10th of December Saltwater P-9 College held our annual Christmas Carols. It began on Monday night with the students from TTB singing and dancing the night away bringing joy to all that watched. We continued on Tuesday night with TTA students performing late into the night bringing a smile to all those that watched. On Friday the 13th of December the Year Two cohort cam e together to watch our peers perform. This was a chance for each timetable to watch the others perform that we missed out on, the students absolutely loved watching each ot
Reflection
In Year 2 we had the opportunity to engage in multiple engaging activities. We experience provocation days, incursions, excursions, swimming, the Colour Run and Christmas Carols. Students reflected on their time in Year 2.
2A- Our favourite memory was going on the excursions, learning about different cultures but ultimately learning a Christmas carol in Te Reo Māori, 2A Class
2B- Our favourite memory this year was coming together as a class to win the tunnel ball game. Along the way, we discovered that friendships can grow into teamwork, and teamwork can blossom into new friendships. 2B Class
2C- My favourite memory is the materials unit building the house to see if it can withstand wind, Abby 2C
