Reading
As we approach the summer holidays, students are all looking forward to a well deserved break from school! While we are all looking forward to some fun and relaxation, it’s also important to remember that continuing to read is super important to maintain and build on reading skills, building on our background knowledge and to continue a reading routine.
Some ideas to keep reading throughout the long break and to make reading fun:
- Create a Holiday Reading challenge- earn rewards for reaching milestones, you could even do a family reading challenge.
- Visit the town library. Borrow and read books in the nice air con, and check out what fun holiday activities they have on offer.
- Set a reading routine- set a regular time to read, even if it’s just for 10 minutes a day.
- Share stories and read together- take turns reading a page or a chapter each and share your thoughts.
- Explore different genres and reading material. Try reading catalogues, graphic novels. If you’re travelling, try an audio book and talk about the stories. Audio books ca be borrowed and downloaded for free through the public library.
Music
Instrumental Music
The Instrumental Music Showcase is fast approaching on Wednesday 27th November, starting promptly at 5:00pm (arrive 4:30pm for tuning). All instrumental music students will be performing in an ensemble and we can't wait to share our music with you! On Monday 2nd December, I will be hosting a Recruiting Day for all current year 2 and 3 students. They will complete a short aural skills test 'The Selmer Survey' and get to see and hear what instruments are available to them in 2025. In year 3, students can select from strings only - violin, viola, cello and double bass. In year 4, students can select from strings, in addition to woodwind (flute, clarinet, bass clarinet and alto saxophone), brass (trumpet, trombone, baritone and euphonium), bass guitar and percussion (consisting of both tuned and untuned percussion instruments).
Students who are in grades 4, 5 and 6 are still very welcome to join the Instrumental Music program in 2025, please make contact with me via shans68@eq.edu.au or through the GSPS office if you would like more information.

Hi Everyone
I would like to thank you all for the great support you have given our swimming program this term. The students are enjoying it immensely and their aquatic skills are improving. It is so good to see improvement and also to experience the willingness of the students to have a go. Thanks also to the staff at Amy Brennan Swimming who are involved in our program. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.
Stay safe over the holidays and I look forward to catching up in 2025.
Mr Mac
