PRIMARY (F-6)

School Leaders Report

As we move through Term 2, it has been a busy and exciting time at St Anne’s College. Over the past few weeks, our Primary classes have transitioned into their new learning spaces, marking an important milestone for our school community. On our recent pupil free day, staff worked tirelessly to move furniture, unpack resources and create welcoming, warm and engaging learning environments. Thank you to our staff and students for their flexibility, teamwork and positive attitude throughout the move. Thanks to their efforts, the transition was completed quickly and efficiently with minimal disruption to learning.

This week, we were proud to present our first School Value Awards at the Primary Assembly. These awards recognise students who consistently model our St Anne’s College values of respecting everyone and everything, always doing our best and helping others succeed. Congratulations to all recipients. We are incredibly proud of the positive contributions our students make to our school community each day.

There have also been many exciting events and significant occasions across the College. Students enjoyed meeting AFLW players during a lunchtime kick-to-kick session, our FIRE Carriers Ceremony reinforced our commitment to reconciliation, and our Year 5 and 6 students have enthusiastically begun Junior Winter Sports. We also recognised National Sorry Day and joined schools across Australia in celebrating National Simultaneous Storytime.

Finally, on behalf of all staff at St Anne’s College, congratulations to the students who celebrated their First Eucharist and Confirmation last weekend. These are significant milestones in their faith journey, and we are very proud of their commitment and participation in these important sacraments.

Thank you for your continued support of our College community. We look forward to the many opportunities and celebrations still to come this term.

Foundation students and teachers have been enjoying their new learning spaces. The students have quickly adapted to new learning routines of where to line up and new eating spaces.

In Literacy we have been learning tricky words such as to, was, and you. This week we participated in the National Simultaneous Storytime.  This is an event that celebrates literacy, imagination and connection through the joy of shared reading. Every year, a picture book created by an Australian author and illustrator is chosen for a free nationwide reading event unlike any other. Millions gather in schools, libraries, homes, preschools and bookshops to read the same story, at the same time, out loud, together. This year we listened to

‘Luna Roo’ and responded through art. Also, in P.E. they students played soccer.

As part of a paired learning project, our Foundation students worked alongside Year 10 students to design and build free-standing bridges using only foil. Inspired by the nursery rhyme The Three Billy Goats Gruff, students were challenged to create a bridge taller than the length of a ruler while ensuring it could stand independently.

The activity encouraged creativity, problem-solving and teamwork, with our Year 10 students supporting the younger learners by sharing ideas and helping bring their designs to life. It was wonderful to see students collaborating so positively and proudly testing their impressive foil bridges.

Our Year One students have settled into their new learning spaces with enthusiasm and are enjoying their learning routines.

In Literacy, we have been learning about the long /i/ sound and the different ways it can be spelt, including y and igh. We have also been learning about pronouns and how they are used in sentences.

In InitialWrite, we are reviewing how to plan and write a recount, with a focus on putting events in order and adding detail to our writing. We have also been learning about rivers through the text Our River Playground by Anna Notley and Uncle Carl.

In Mathematics, we are continuing to learn about counting and place value. We have also started using Facts on Fire to help build our fluency with number facts.

Year 4

The Year 4 students have settled into their new classrooms very well. They have adapted quickly to the new learning spaces and have continued to approach their learning with enthusiasm and a positive attitude.

Mathematics:

In Maths, we have been learning about measurement and perimeter. They practised choosing suitable units and tools to measure objects, comparing and ordering lengths, and finding items close to target measurements. We also explored perimeter by measuring the distance around shapes and larger spaces using rulers, string and tape measures.

In Literacy, we have begun reading the novel Uncle Xbox. Using the text as inspiration, we will be learning how to write a factual recount focused on the British colonisation of Australia. Students will explore key historical events, build topic vocabulary, and develop their skills in planning and structuring informative writing.

Science:

In Science, students learned about the water cycle and explored the importance of groundwater and freshwater. They completed a practical investigation focused on evaporation and developed their understanding of scientific observation. Students also practised making thoughtful predictions and using evidence to support their thinking.

Year 5

Our Grade 5 students have had a busy and exciting few weeks of learning. In Literacy, students recently finished the Dirrarn series and have now begun a new book, Waves by Donna Rawlins, exploring themes of immigration and the challenges many families face when moving to a new country. This has sparked thoughtful discussions and deep reflection among students.

In Mathematics, we are beginning our new unit on Probability, where students will investigate chance, likelihood and everyday probability situations through hands-on activities and games.

Our Year 5 students also recently participated in Winter Sports, competing in Tee-ball, Soccer and Netball. All students represented the school wonderfully, showing excellent team spirit, determination and sportsmanship throughout the day.

We have also recently moved into our new learning space, and students have adapted to the change extremely well. They have shown flexibility, resilience and enthusiasm as they settle into the new environment.

In Connections, students are beginning a new unit focused on sportsmanship as part of our Leadership studies. Students are planning and teaching their own PE games, developing their confidence as leaders while learning the importance of communication, inclusion and ensuring everyone is working together successfully.

Year 6

The Year 6 students have continued to engage well in their learning and have enjoyed exploring a range of interesting topics across the curriculum. It has been great to see students building their knowledge, asking thoughtful questions and working collaboratively with their peers and younger students.

In Literacy, we have been researching early Australian immigration and learning about the important contribution of Aboriginal Australians and Japanese pearl divers in Broome's pearling industry. In Humanities, students have continued to investigate significant historical events from the 1800s through to the 1970s, including the World Wars, the sinking of the Titanic and the Space Race. In Mathematics, we have been exploring decimals as parts of a whole and comparing their values, as well as learning about probability and the likelihood of different outcomes occurring. We have also enjoyed spending time with our Foundation buddies, helping them learn how to play cooperatively, work in groups and build positive relationships within our school community.

Specialist - Performing Arts

Students from Foundation to Year 5 have been on an exciting journey around the world this term—exploring a rich variety of cultural dances!

As part of their Performing Arts learning, students have been discovering where different dances originate, how they are performed, and why they are important within their cultures. From energetic rhythms to expressive storytelling, each dance has offered a unique window into traditions from across the globe.

To bring this learning to life, students have been using their very own Dance Passports. As they “travel” to each country, they:

  • Locate and colour the country on a world map
  • Learn about the dance’s origins and cultural significance
  • Explore movements and performance styles
  • “Move through customs” and receive a special sticker to mark their journey

This experience has not only built students’ understanding of dance but also deepened their appreciation for global cultures and traditions. It has been wonderful to see students engaged, curious, and enthusiastic as they step into dances from around the world.

We look forward to continuing our travels and sharing more of our cultural dance discoveries!

Specialist - Italian

This term, students in Years 2, 3 and 4 have been exploring Italian food and culture, with a particular focus on pasta. Throughout the unit, students learned about the origins of pasta, the many different pasta shapes and varieties, and a range of traditional Italian dishes.

As part of their learning, students first practised creating pasta shapes using playdough before developing their skills further by making pasta with real dough. Through this hands-on experience, students followed the process of preparing and shaping pasta while building an appreciation for traditional Italian cooking techniques and culture.

To conclude the unit, students enjoyed tasting the pasta they had created themselves, providing a rewarding and delicious way to celebrate their learning.

Parents/carers are reminded there is a very important process to follow if your student must leave the college at any time throughout school hours. Please ensure you follow these steps:

Parents/carers MUST provide a note to the front office, at the start of the school day, stating the following:

- Student Name

- Date of leave required

- The time the student must present to reception to take their leave

- If they will return to the college the same day, and if so what time they will return

- The reason for the leave being requested

- The parent/carer’s name and signature

Please note, students will only be permitted to be collected by their parent/carer unexpectedly and without a note if it is an emergency.

We remind all that the college opens at 8:30am. This enables educators time to prepare for their day ahead. We appreciate your support in helping our educators be successful. Yard duty staff begin at 8:30am to monitor play spaces before the school day begins at 8:55am.
