Class Three have been engaging in stories from the “Torah” or “Old Testament”. These stories have taken us back to thousands of years before the birth of Christ. One of the most powerful stories relates to King Nimrod and his kingdom. For those that don’t know, the story is about how Nimrod came to be king and how he ruled. At the time of him becoming the ruling monarch, it seems that there was great disorder in the general population. The people wanted a leader, to be lead. Nimrod being a great champion in battle was who the masses decided they wanted. At first reluctant, he then willingly embraced the power and position as the general population subjugated themselves to his will.
His egoic extremes were great, such as wanting new thrones made of ever more fantastic and costly materials, always built on one another, higher and higher. His most famous inspiration being the tower of Babel. Designed to reach to heaven, putting Nimrod on equal footing with God. The people built this tower and lost all sense of humanity, with bricks for building being valued more than a human life. A valuable lesson in the obsessive aspects of human nature. It also illustrates the consequences of placing ones trust in an outer authority not worthy of such trust. Abraham, who follows God ( or also this could be interpreted as truth, or the true self, a worthy authority) is lead out of the situation. The tower of Babel of course collapses eventually as do all things that are born out of ungrounded egoic desire, and in a great storm the many languages of the earth are born.
These are great learning for the children. What is true authority? Where does it reside? Even, Who am I really? Who would I follow? Would I follow anyone?
The stories are not presented in a religious sense, although they are born out of the Hebrew faith. Even so they are rich in imagery and moral content.
The structure in the photos is the children’s attempt at building the tower of Babel, they got to 12 stories high, quite an accomplishment.
