Round the classes

Reception: Katie

The receptions have been really busy learning three new sounds and working on how to blend these new sounds to make words. We have also been learning how to put events in chronological order when doing oral story telling.

In maths, we have been learning the words ‘more,’ ‘less,’ and the ‘same.’ We have also been learning how to represent different numbers.

In art, we have been learning how to create different artworks with shape, and last week went outside and did some leaf rubbing. We have also been making some special presents for our mums for Mother's Day and are looking forward to learning more about ourselves as part of the self-aware theme this term.

We are super excited to have Max (pre-service teacher) in our class this term; he has already started doing lots of work with us!

Year 1: Alex

Welcome back to Term 2!

The Year 1 children have settled back into the swing of things and are confidently re-establishing our classroom routines. The children were excited to share what they got up to during the holidays and wrote recounts on their first day back. We hope you enjoy reading about some of their experiences!

In maths, we have been learning to skip count by 2s. We’ve been practising this in a variety of fun ways, including creating hopscotch games to 20, counting legs on eggs, grouping objects, and singing songs.

We have also been exploring our school values theme for the term, ‘self-awareness’, and created our own T-shirt designs. Students have been learning to be more self-aware by recognising their own thoughts and feelings, as well as respecting others’ feelings and personal ‘bubbles’. Be sure to check out their designs in our room that show their strengths, interests and more!

We hope you have a great term 2.

Year 2: Suzie

Our Year 2 class have had a great start to the term.

In literacy, we are building our skills in reading fluency and spelling. In phonics, we are looking at the suffix -ed. We are learning what makes a good sentence in our writing, exploring the difference between a simple and a compound sentence.

Our numeracy lessons include daily math chats that look at place value, subitising and reading graphs and Bond Blocks that explore the part, part, whole concepts.

We worked with the year 4/5 class on our self-aware t-shirts (which is our Learn, Stand, Give, Fly value focus this term), identifying what makes us special, what we like and things we are proud of.

We held the assembly last week, with each student having a short script to practise and present to develop their oral language and presentation skills.

Year 2/3: Emma

Welcome back to another fun-filled term of learning and engagement! Students have settled smoothly back into their routines and are showing a positive approach to their learning.

Our morning reading sessions have been a strong focus, as they play an important role in developing fluency. Fluency involves accuracy, speed, and expression, and when these elements come together, students are better able to comprehend what they read. Once a week, students also enjoy reading a variety of texts in the library—it's always wonderful to see their focus and the calm atmosphere that reading creates.

In Mathematics, we are exploring how to represent and model addition and subtraction in different ways. Students are using “think boards” to demonstrate their understanding and explain their thinking.

In Literacy, we have been learning about information reports. Students are practising how to identify the main idea in a sample text and take their own notes based on what they have read.

As part of our Butterfly Project, we have been discussing the creation of a butterfly garden. Students have designed their own attractions to draw in butterflies, such as butterfly houses, feeders, or mobiles, showing great creativity and enthusiasm.

JAM Band was a highlight this week, with students thoroughly enjoying the music and dance performances. It’s always an engaging experience that brings lots of energy and excitement to the classroom!

Year 3/4: Zoe and Kelly

Since the start of the term, our class has settled in beautifully, and it has been wonderful getting to know each student. Kelly and I have spent time establishing our class values of respect, effort and responsibility, which we refer to daily to help guide our behaviour and learning. These values support us in becoming the best versions of ourselves both inside and outside the classroom.

In mathematics, we have begun our unit on decimals and money, exploring how these concepts connect and apply to real-life situations.

In English, we have started our information report unit. Students have been learning about the structure and key features of information texts, and how to organise their ideas clearly for an audience. We have also been continuing with our spelling program, with a focus on building a stronger understanding of parts of speech to support both reading and writing.

In Design and Digital Technologies, we have been focusing on healthy eating and making positive food choices. Students are working towards creating their own recipe cards, which they will be able to take home and share with family and friends.

On Friday, the JAM Band came to school. It was fabulous to see how engaged the children were. Eight children were chosen to participate - they dressed up to the song Pokémon. So much singing and dancing.

Excited for a fun term ahead! Thanks, Kelly and Zoe!!

Year 4/5: Rachael and Troy

The Year 4/5 class are thoroughly enjoying our Geography unit, How Humans Change Places. Through rich discussions, we have been sharing perceptive ideas and asking thoughtful questions around our key inquiry: How do people change the environment around them and what are the consequences? It has been wonderful to see students thinking critically about both positive and negative human impacts.

In English, we have been having fun exploring words with the suffix “-less,” learning how it changes meaning to “without.” Students have enjoyed experimenting with language and creating their own examples. Our novel study of Rowan of Rin has sparked great interest, with a focus on characterisation and how the author builds tension to keep readers engaged. We will be using these techniques in our own narrative writing.

In maths, we have been exploring inverse operations and addition strategies, including column addition, adding from the left, and the split strategy. It has been fantastic to see growing confidence and flexibility in students’ thinking.

It has been a vibrant and productive two weeks in our classroom!

Year 5/6: Sallie

The first two weeks of term have been busy!

In maths, our class has been unpacking subtraction.  Ask your child for some of the different ways we have been looking at subtraction. Some of the different ways we have been approaching subtraction is by using the compensation method, the adding method, MAB blocks, expanded form and standard column form). Ask your child which one they identify the most with....I will be interested in what they have to say.

We have started a unit of work on Media Arts and are coming to an understanding of how we can use technology and creative ideas to persuade and influence an audience. We will later use this to support our learning in student-driven research.

In English, we have continued on with our spelling program and have been focusing on persuasive writing.  The persuasive topic for our first writing piece was " Should school start later?". Some interesting responses.

We loved JAM Band last Friday, and everyone got involved in the fun experience.

Cricket today, Wheels Day Friday, Netball Tuesday...lots of great things happening.
