Year 11 Legal Studies

Year 11 Supreme Court Excursion
On Monday 27th April, the Year 11 Legal Studies class went on an excursion to the Supreme Court.
In the morning, we had the opportunity to meet Justice Adrian Finanzio and he talked to us about his role in the courts, specifically in the Common Law division. We were able to ask him questions and he discussed many interesting things about the trial process and why he chose a pathway into law to become a judge. He also talked about what he thought was the most challenging part of being a judge, telling us about some of the difficult cases that he has had to work on.
Furthermore, we were able to observe a criminal court case which was a great opportunity to apply our learning to real life, and witness how the courts run in reality. We were able to observe an expert medical witness give testimony regarding a murder case.
Finally, we were given a tour around the buildings, especially around the Supreme Court library, which had an expansive collection of all the cases that have taken place in the Supreme Court, many of them dating back hundreds of years.
Overall, this was a great experience for our class to apply what we have learnt in class about the courts and the justice system to real life scenarios, as well as learn new things that we are yet to learn in class.
