Science Begins in the Bulukuyt Building

This term has marked a significant milestone for the Science faculty, with the commencement of classes in the new senior science and biology laboratories within the Bulukuyt Building.

My Year 12 Physics class had the distinction of being the first Physics class to use the new laboratory facilities. Later that week, students also undertook the first practical lesson in the space, constructing simple DC motors. Using lacquered copper wire, students wound coils, selectively removed sections of lacquer to create a commutator, and tested the completed motors. The activity provided an excellent introduction to practical work in the new laboratory environment.

The first Biology class to use the new laboratories was the Year 12 class led by Elizabeth Tasiopoulos. Their lesson also marked an important milestone in the beginning of Science teaching in these impressive new spaces.

The new laboratories have been equipped with approximately $20,000 worth of new equipment, providing students with outstanding resources to support practical learning and scientific investigation.

The Science faculty extends its sincere appreciation to Jess Wiltshire, whose extensive work as Laboratory Technician in establishing and equipping the rooms represented a substantial undertaking. Jess was assisted by other Education Support staff, with particular thanks to Andrew Tape, Facilities Manager, for his support throughout the preparation process.

Science Beyond the Laboratory

The Bulukuyt Building is already contributing positively to student life beyond the classroom. During a recent lunchtime yard duty, it was pleasing to see students from Physics, Mathematical Methods and other subject areas making enthusiastic use of the rooftop open space, where the large outdoor chess board has quickly become a popular focal point.

It has been particularly pleasing to see students using the area for recreation, friendly competition and social connection, highlighting the broader educational value of thoughtfully designed learning spaces.
