Upper school Electives

The Year 4 - 6 students continue their electives each Wednesday afternoon. Steph leads a photography group. This week the photography students went out on a local excursion looking at our unique landscape, from the pondage to the hills and mountains and even looking at the footpaths with their shapes, shadows and lines. They took pictures and discovered how they can manipulate the contours of a structure through a photo.

The Year 3s had a kitchen garden session with Kathryn:

This week in kitchen garden we have been learning about herbs and spices.

On Monday grade 3s collected fresh herbs from our garden and then went into the kitchen to make their own fresh milkshakes. Using frozen bananas and milk as a base, each team chose different ingredients to make their ultimate, tasty fresh drink. They sampled each others creations and discussed the outcomes.

Flavours explored included: mint, parsley, fennel, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, vanilla essence, cocoa powder and strawberries.

The prep/1s designed and built a bed for Goldilocks in their STEM session. I hope they were not too hard, not too soft, but just right!

The Year 2s had the chance to create some marbling patterns in their science lesson with Kim. They saw how milk, food dye and detergent react together to make some very coll patterns. They even used their marbling to dye some paper.

Prep/1 maths

This week the Prep/1 class have used Freda the frog to demonstrate positional language in maths. Freda was manipulated to move ‘up, down, beside, on top of, under, forwards, backwards, in between, rotating and around’. Freda did a super job and was very happy to assist in the students’ mathematical learning.

Inquiry

This term in inquiry, our overarching topic across all year levels is perspective. Students will:

  • explore how our cultural background and experiences shape our  perspective,
  • consider how life has changed and stayed the same through generations,
  • develop inquiry skills through questioning and exploring artefacts, and
  • analyse historical events  from various perspectives, including  First Nations Australians.

In the younger year levels, our inquiry will focus on understanding how we can learn about the past and how life has changed and stayed the same through generations. It might be a good opportunity to come in and share your old record players and dial telephones!

Our older grades will inquire into how colonisation impacted different individuals and groups of people, learn about the reasons, causes and effects of colonisation and discover why it is so important to listen to different  perspectives?
