Homework

📖 Literacy

This fortnight, our Grade 4 students have continued their study of the novel 'Storm Boy.' Through this unit they have begun to plan an information report on the Coorong, which is the main setting in Storm Boy. Students have discussed the sorts of information that could be included about the Coorong, such as the flora and fauna, where it’s located, and the types of water contained within the Coorong.

In their sentence level writing, students have been reviewing their knowledge of simple and complex sentences. They have discussed the differences and similarities between independent and dependent clauses, and how subordinating conjunctions can be used to introduce a dependent clause in a complex sentence.

➗ Maths

Over the past fortnight in Maths, our Grade 4 students have finalised their unit on decimals. They looked at writing and ordering numbers to two decimal places, as well as renaming hundredths and tenths. To finish off the unit, students enjoyed playing a game of Decimal Detective, where they had to find the teacher’s secret decimal number, based on a series of clues.

Students then began our unit on length and measurement, with a particular focus on perimeter and area. Students have measured the perimeter of a range of shapes, as well as enclosed spaces. They have compared and ordered different lengths using metric units. Students also learnt the importance of measuring with a ruler correctly by always starting at the 0, not the end of the ruler, while also learning how to measure curved edges using string.

🧠 Knowledge Rich Units

Our Grade 4 students are thoroughly enjoying their learning during our Knowledge Rich unit 'Service, Courage, Mateship and Loyalty: Our Australian Heroes.' This fortnight they have learnt about the ANZACs and the Gallipoli campaign, as well as the ANZACs in France during the battle of Fromelles. This tied in perfectly with our commemoration of ANZAC day, where students decorated poppies to display in the classroom.

Students also learnt about The Victoria Cross, which is the highest award for acts of bravery in wartime and Australia's highest military honour. They learnt about some famous recipients of this, including Bruce Kingsbury and Tom Derrick. Students also learnt about how military and civilian medals differ, and that even kids can receive an Order of Australia!

Preview: Over the next fortnight students will learn about the Diggers in World War II, as well as the role of women in Australian war history, and some of our modern Australian heroes.

🌿 Wellbeing

In Wellbeing this fortnight, students have begun their unit on 'Stress Management.' We discussed what stress is, and how it can present in different ways for everyone. We also learnt some coping strategies to help manage our stress, such as the ones displayed below:

Students also practised some self-calming strategies and games to help deal with stress. They particularly enjoyed the 'Slow-motion Mirror Game,' where they had to follow the movements of their teacher or peers. The aim of this game was to slow our bodies and minds to help focus on self-control and self-calming.

Preview: Next fortnight students will begin the topic of Help-Seeking, by looking at different scenarios to work out how big a problem is and when/how they can seek help.

🏅 Sport in Grade 4

This fortnight in Grade 4 Sport, students have been focussing on developing their soccer skills. Students have worked at moving the ball with both feet to control the ball, as well as passing the ball with accuracy. Students have utilised these new skills in a range of fun games, including Rob the Nest, and Heroes and Villains. It has been wonderful to see students improving their coordination, accuracy, and confidence in soccer throughout this fortnight.

🌟 Kinder Visit

This year, the Grade 4 students are fortunate to have the opportunity to visit our onsite kinder, to build relationship with potential LPS students. The aim is for each class to attend multiple sessions across the year, and this week it was 4R’s turn to visit!

During their session, the students read a story about being a super friend, completed a drawing activity, and enjoyed spending time playing outside with the kinder students. Everyone had a fantastic time, and we are excited to see what 4E gets up to during their visit in Week 5!
