📖 Literacy

Literature

We have started a new literature unit centered around the text, ‘City of Light.' This tells the story of a family living in Perth in 1962, during an exciting time when astronaut John Glenn, became the first American to orbit Earth, prompting families to turn on every light to illuminate the city. Students have engaged in pair-shares to discuss how a community can support one another, even when far away. We also discussed how we received news from the past,  it is different from today. From the text, developed our knowledge around complete sentences using the

conjunctions: because, but and so.

Preview - Students will continue studying the text with a focus on character feelings and the difficulty of space travel. We will also explore compound sentences, before moving into our new text 'Curiosity: The Story of the Mars Rover.'

Knowledge Rich

This fortnight we have concluded our unit on Uluru. Students enjoyed learning about the various habitats and ecosystems found around Uluru, as well as learning about ways we can protect it for many years to come. We hope you enjoyed our open afternoon with your children. We know they were very proud to share their information booklet and beautiful artwork with you! It was lovely to see so many smiling faces.

Preview - In a few weeks we will start a new unit on Ancient Greece.

➗ Maths

Over the past fortnight in Maths, students have been working hard to develop their understanding of place value and measurement.

We recently completed our unit on place value. During this time, students explored how to compare and order four-digit numbers, building confidence in recognising the value of each digit. They also practised rounding three-digit numbers to the nearest 10 and 100, and extended this skill to rounding four-digit numbers to the nearest 10, 100, and 1000. Students were encouraged to apply their place value knowledge to solve a range of problems involving four-digit numbers, strengthening both their reasoning and problem-solving skills.

Following this, we began our new unit on length. Students are learning to identify and use suitable informal units of measurement to measure objects. They have been measuring and comparing the lengths of different objects and shapes using these informal units, as well as ordering objects based on their length. Additionally, students are developing their estimation skills by predicting lengths and then measuring to check the accuracy of their estimates.

Preview: Next week, students will begin their second addition and subtraction unit. Where the students will build strong partitioning skills as they move from informal strategies to formal written methods. They’ll learn to confidently add and subtract two-digit numbers using tools like base-10 blocks, number bonds, and number lines to support their understanding.

😊 Wellbeing

This fortnight, Grade 2 students have begun exploring the 4R’s program, with a focus on stress management. They have engaged in thoughtful discussions about what stress can feel like in their bodies, such as a racing heart, and identified situations that might cause it, like presentations or important sports games.

Students particularly enjoyed participating in activities like the slow-motion mirror game, where they practised slowing down, focusing on their breathing, and being mindful of their partner’s movements. Through these experiences, students are developing an understanding that stress can feel different for everyone, and are building simple, effective strategies to help manage it.

Preview - In the coming weeks, students will continue to build on this learning by exploring a range of relaxation techniques to support their wellbeing. In Week 4, we will have our Circles session.
