How many mum’s are looking fabulous, rocking their amazing hand-painted beaded necklaces? Our K-2 students were very lucky to have time in small groups to paint their beads and, if present at school, organise them into a pattern and thread them onto the string. The only thing they didn’t do was spray the protective sealant layer on the beads to protect them for many years of wear. We hope you loved your gift!

Next, without realising it, your children started their study of paper techniques, using ‘layering’ to create their Mother’s Day cards. It was so lovely to see children pick patterns and colours that reflect either their mother’s likes or the colour of the necklace they created. Choosing the perfect button was taken very seriously as well. Staff heard rumours that many buttons were very ‘rare’, ‘precious’, or just simply ‘beautiful’ (perhaps just as their mothers are).

Now that K-2 are moving their history focus to Ancient Greece, our visual arts focus is on developing paper techniques. This will all make sense in a few weeks, when we will share our final works, examples of Greek architecture. These pieces will be created solely from paper, with a focus on folding, cutting, rolling and layering. We had so much fun exploring these techniques this week. However, the more we can practice at home, the more successful our final pieces will be. Below is an image that demonstrates many of the skills we are practising.  If you have any scrap paper, mailers or newspapers at home, we would love for your children to practise these skills. The most challenging would be the zig-zag (or accordion) fold. Keeping the folds even and remembering to flip them each time was a challenge for many children. We had a 1/3 of the class absent for the first lesson last Monday. So, any time you can give these skills would be beneficial.

Finally, as we approach our school musical at the end of next term, we are starting to prepare ourselves for dance. We have been working with Ricky and his team on Amplify to explore our personal space (our kinesphere), moving through low, middle and high levels and creating shapes with our bodies. A highlight of these lessons, aside from meeting with Ricky and engaging in lessons, is giving our students the chance to reflect by providing feedback to the educators. Our feedback is becoming more detailed each week as they take ownership of their learning process.
