Catholic Identity & Mission News

On Tuesday, May 5, our Year 10’s from both campuses, joined together to enjoy a day of music, workshops and fun on their Year 10 Reflection Day. Supported by Gen Bryant and her Wavemakers Team, our wonderful Year 10 RE teachers and Heads of Campus, the day focused on themes including our college motto ‘Be not Afraid’ and our annual theme ‘Let all that you do be done in love’. Workshops ranged from meditation to a Catholic Identity Treasure hunt around the school, to art and memory box activities, ‘Shopping for Good’ ethical consumerism issues and a St Peter’s-themed Family Feud quiz show and more! Our Year 10’s participated in the day very positively and most stepped out of their comfort zones to meet new people, try new things and back themselves to enjoy both! It was a team effort to make this such a successful day so my sincere thanks to all staff and students involved.

The Glowrey House Feast Day celebrations then took place on Thursday, May 7. Unfortunately for our Clyde North Glowrey staff and students, we had to cancel our attendance at morning mass at St Thomas the Apostle because of poor weather. However, we gathered in the Geode for an extended prayer service which, though not as good as attending mass, still started the Feast Day celebrations with thanks being given to God for Mary Glowrey, and asking for her intercession for Glowrey House, our school and our world. Cranbourne Campus staff and students were able to attend 11.30am mass at St Agatha’s and this was a wonderful celebration full of prayer, song and active participation. Mary Glowrey (1887-1957) was a Victorian-born ‘religious sister and educated doctor who spent 37 years in India, where she set up healthcare services and systems. She is believed to be the first religious sister to practise as a doctor.’ She certainly was an inspiration in living out both our College motto and annual theme, and we are privileged to have a strong connection to her here at St Peter’s College.

And then next week is going to be very special as our current FIRE Carrier students will commission 55 new staff and students as FIRE Carriers at St Peter’s College. The commissioning ceremonies will take place on Monday, May 11 at Cranbourne Campus and Tuesday, May 12 at Clyde North Campus. A reminder that FIRE Carriers are people who share a passion for learning about Aboriginal culture and history and are committed to sharing this knowledge and promoting Reconciliation within, and beyond, the school community. Our Environment Captains Khushi and Rianna, working especially with Mr Tishan Lokuge (Faith and Mission Leader), have been driving forces in getting our FIRE Carrier program off the ground this year with regular meetings and planning well underway for many activities during the upcoming Reconciliation Week. In addition, they have been asked to be a part of the commissioning of students at St Agatha’s Primary School in the coming weeks! This will be a wonderful way to further connect with potential future students of St Peter’s College, and to give our FIRE Carrier students the opportunity to role model and promote respect, fairness and inclusion for Aboriginal people.

Faith in action is vital to a Catholic education and with dedicated programs, and inspiration from the likes of Mary Glowrey, we will continue to encourage our students to love learning, participating and serving in whatever ways they can.
