News from the Art Department
A lot of exciting things have been happening in the Visual Arts Department.
Three of our students attended Design Tracks, an immersive multi-day art and career program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander secondary students, hosted by QAGOMA Learning. We are very appreciative of this amazing opportunity that helps students to build skills and connect with established First Nations mentors. Our students had the privilege to learn from world renown artists Alick Tipoti, Dylan Mooney and Boneta-Marie Mabo. They were also mentored by Peggy Casabad Lane who is the Senior Manager of Engagement (First Nations) at Queensland Museums.
Activities included attending a Mandingalbay Cultural tour where we learnt about local Indigenous cultural stories, significant historical figures, tools and plants and also about how some cultural stories connect to geographical features of Trinity Inlet.
We had guided tours of NorthSite Art Gallery and Cairns Art Gallery. The event culminated with students collaborating in their groups, guided by their mentors, towards creating artworks based on the theme of Reclamation & Regeneration.

A number of students have entered work into the QATISF Creative Arts Competition, The BLA Billboard Competition and Receive > Respond Exhibitions. We encourage you to support our gents and other young creatives from the area by visiting the Receive>Respond exhibition in Tank 4 in Collins Avenue, which opened today and runs until Sunday 21 June.

Last term, our Year 10s completed their propaganda portrait screen-prints with amazing results. This term they are working on experimental folios based on landscapes. Our Year 9 students completed beautiful ceramics that celebrate Cairns. They are currently painting skate decks inspired by cultural narratives.
