This term began with a flurry of excitement as students created special keepsakes to celebrate Mother’s Day. Across the school, students explored a range of materials, techniques and creative ideas while thoughtfully designing gifts to honour the wonderful women in their lives. Students worked incredibly hard, showing persistence, creativity and care as they brought their ideas to life. From colourful creations to handmade treasures, each piece was made with love and pride. Please take a look below at what each year level created to celebrate these special people. 💐

Our Foundation students enjoyed exploring colour, shape and creativity through their beautiful vase artworks. Using warm sunset-inspired backgrounds and vibrant painted dots, students created unique floral arrangements bursting with colour. This activity encouraged creativity, fine motor skill development and artistic expression, resulting in a display of bright and cheerful artworks.

Year One students experimented with batik glue on calico purses before painting them with acrylic paint. Once washed, they decorated their bags with jewels, using their knowledge of the colour wheel to choose complementary colours that made their designs pop. Students worked really hard throughout this project, showing patience and care as they created colourful and unique keepsakes.

Year Two students worked with diligence and care to create these wonderfully cheerful magnified flowers. After drawing their initial designs in oil pastel, students selected two analogous colours (colours that sit next to each other on the colour wheel) for their petals before choosing a complementary colour to make the background pop. We couldn’t be more proud of the care, creativity and persistence they showed throughout the process, with their hard work resulting in bright, vibrant artworks full of personality.

Year Three students practised patience and fine motor skills while creating these sentimental suncatchers. After tracing their stencil onto acetate using a mixture of black acrylic paint and PVA glue, students carefully coloured their designs using Sharpies. We hope these special keepsakes brighten your windows and serve as a lovely reminder of the care and effort that went into making them.

Year Four really stepped up for their Mother’s Day project! After lightly tracing their animal onto watercolour paper, students carefully painted masking fluid (which dries into a rubber-like layer) over their design. This allowed them to paint vibrant watercolours across the entire page before rubbing away the masking fluid to reveal the detailed design underneath. This project required patience, precision and persistence, and we couldn’t be more proud of the care students took to create these beautiful keepsakes. 💐

Year Five and Six students explored a new medium for their Mother’s Day gifts this year. Students experimented with metal embossing by tracing insects and bugs onto aluminium embossing foil before adding textured backgrounds to their designs. Once complete, they carefully turned their pieces over and decorated them using Sharpies and jewels. The results have been simply outstanding, and we are both impressed and incredibly proud of how well students embraced this challenging new technique with creativity, patience and attention to detail. 💐
Art created in Years 4, 5 and 6 was designed with the idea that families may like to display these special keepsakes at home. We have included an example of how you might choose to frame and display your artwork, celebrating the creativity, effort and care that went into each piece.
