Principal Team Report

Sam Tyndall and Emily Harvey

Hello BRPS Community,

Winter has certainly arrived with the start of the season this week. The school has continued to be a hive of activity with arts, sports, camps, sustainability and wellbeing events, in addition to core teaching and learning programs.

I trust you're staying well with the Winter months about to descend upon us, and we ask for your support .with the following health message:

Supporting Student Health – Colds, Flu, and Respiratory Illnesses

As we approach the colder months, it’s important to work together to help keep our school community healthy. Here’s what families need to know:

Stay Home When Unwell If your child is showing signs of a cold, flu, or other respiratory illness (e.g. fever, cough, sore throat) please keep them home until they are well enough to return to school. This helps protect other students and staff.

Encourage Good Hygiene At school, we teach and encourage good hygiene habits, including:

  • Regular handwashing with soap.
  • Covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue or elbow.
  • Using hand sanitiser when needed.

Working Together Your support in keeping unwell children home, encouraging healthy habits, and staying informed helps us keep our school community safe and well.

Thank you for working with us to support your child’s learning and wellbeing!

Semester One Assessment & Student Achievement Reports

I would like to acknolwedge the dedication, professional commitment and expertise that our teachers continually demonstrate. They have excelled in responding to and planning for learning for all students. Updating and adapting their skills to evidence-aligned practice and commitment to pursuing the best outcomes for our students has been outstanding.

I'm also proud of the engagement, positive attitude, effort and commitment demonstrated by our students towards their own learning, as well as supporting those around them.

Semester One Reports

Student achievement and progress is shared with parents via student achievement reports and conferences.

We will be providing student achievement reports for Semester 1 as scheduled.

Reports will be distributed  via Compass on Tuesday 23rd June.

These reports will continue to include important information about your child’s learning progress and achievement. However, please note that full descriptive comments will not be included due to industrial action taken earlier this term by the Australian Education Union.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

We value the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with you. Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled for Thursday 6th August (Term 3 / Week 4), and we encourage you to attend. Alternatively, you are welcome to arrange a meeting with your child’s teacher.

Thank you for your understanding and ongoing support.

Education Support Celebration Day

On Monday 18th May we recognised and celebrated our wonderful Education Support staff members and the vital role they play in our school to support the learning and wellbeing of all students.

Our Education Support staff include those that support students with their learning - Sarah, Rose, Belinda, Lu, Sal, June, Myra, and Linda. Our administration and office staff - Clare, Nat, Judy and Sharon, Michelle our Psychologist and Dino our maintenance officer. Our school wouldn’t be the wonderful place that it is without our Education Support staff and all that they do.

Thank you to the parent reps and BRPS families for supplying a most amazing morning tea and the teachers and students for supporting the morning of appreciation.

Our next student-free day is TOMORROW - Friday 5th June (adjoining King's Birthday Long Weekend). Camp Australia have opened bookings for a full-day program - please see the attached flyer and book by Wednesday 13th May.

Further details about the night will be forwarded soon via Compass NewsFeed.

House Cross Country

Congratulations to all of the students who participated in our House Cross Country on Tuesday 13th May. The weather was beautiful and the House Spirit was high. It was amazing to see students from Foundation through to Year 6 joining together in their Houses to cheer on fellow teammates. All students who completed the whole or part of the course should be incredibly proud of their efforts.

Thank you to PE teacher Adam Littlehales for organising such a successful and well-run (pardon the pun) event. Thanks also to BRPS staff and parents who supervised and cheered our athletes on.

District & Division Cross Country

Congratulations to all students who went on to compete at the higher levels, a full report (including invidivdual results) is included on the Physical Education page.

Parent Payments and Voluntary Contributions

The Compass Portal remains live for families to log in and complete all school payments.

The BRPS School Council, staff and school community have high expectations of all     curriculum programs, resources and facilities that the school provides. Much of the operational costs including the provision of computers (including laptops), high-quality school resources, extra sports equipment, library/ICT support and equipment, quality art and science supplies and maintenance, along with the provision of new curriculum initiatives are supported solely from local fundraising, including parent payments.

Parent voluntary contributions are a vital aspect of maintaining these high standards and we thank our parent community for their generous support in this area to benefit all students across the school.

Reconciliation Week Assembly

On Friday the 22nd of May we recognised Sorry Day and the start of Reconciliation Week at our whole-school assembly. Reconciliation week runs from the 27th of May - 3rd of June. In 2026, the theme is "All In". As a whole school, students thought about and committed to how they can be "All In" for reconciliation. "All In" is a call for all Australians to commit  wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day.

"All In makes it clear that reconciliation is not a spectator sport and that all of us must step away from the sidelines and take action to make change.

The theme also reminds us that reconciliation and advancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights isn’t a passive activity, and it is not solely the responsibility of First Nations people, who have carried the weight of championing, explaining and acting for far too long. Reconciliation will not happen by itself, and it will not happen without all of us. It urges us to look ahead and continue the push forward as past lessons guide us.

Thank you to Year 6 School Captains and Student Action Team, under the guidance and organisation of Reconciliation Leaders Rose Thompson  and Krystal Frazer, for confidently leading the BRPS students and community through their participation in our assembly.

As a whole school, all classes are contributing to an installation as a visual recognition of being "all in".

Early Arrivals and Supervision

We frequently see students arriving at school well before 8.45am, even between 8am-8.15am. Senior students arriving early by bike and remaining in the bike shed is a specific concern.

We kindly remind all parents and carers that school supervision begins at 8:45am, when staff are rostered on yard duty.

Students should not arrive at school before 8:45am, as there is no staff supervision available prior to this time.

If your child needs to arrive earlier, they must be booked into our Outside School Hours Care provider, Camp Australia, who offer a fully supervised and engaging Before School Care program.

Ensuring students arrive at the correct time helps us maintain a safe and well-supervised environment for everyone.

Thank you for your support and cooperation.

MORNING ROUTINES

Parents can assist us to ensure a calm morning by talking about and reinforcing the morning routines that ensure readiness for learning. These include walking through school grounds, waiting quietly outside classrooms before soft-starts commence and ensuring that all sports equipment (especially basketballs/footballs) is kept in bags or held on to on the way to class.

2026 School Council - Next Meeting

The next School Council meeting of Black Rock Primary School will be held on Thursday 11 June at 6.30pm.

2027 Foundation Enrolments

We have now held four well-attended tours for prospective 2027 Foundation students. This year we are using the Department of Education’s secure digital enrolment system called VicStudents. This means you can submit your Foundation (Prep) applications online and receive updates through the system

If you are aware of any families that are seeking a school for next year, please direct them to our website for information about these events and the enrolment process.

Sibling enrolments for Foundation 2027 are now open thrrough the digital enrolment system. Please see the BRPS Website or inquire at the office for information and support.
