A note from Mr Jackson

Ongoing Teacher Professional Learning

We’re excited to share that Rosanna Primary School will be hosting a series of collaborative classroom walk‑throughs designed to strengthen consistency of great teaching across our community. Beginning next week, colleagues from Watsonia North Primary School will visit our classrooms, followed in the coming weeks by visits from Viewbank and Ivanhoe Primary. These visits give our teachers the opportunity to both showcase the rich learning happening here at Rosanna and to learn from the practice of nearby schools, supporting our shared commitment to continuous improvement.

This collaborative, peer‑learning approach is part of our ongoing professional learning model. By opening our doors and engaging in structured classroom walk‑throughs, we deepen our collective practice, share effective strategies, and ensure every student benefits from consistent, high‑quality teaching. We look forward to welcoming our neighbouring schools and to our staff having reciprocal opportunities to observe and reflect on the excellent teaching across the local network.

Stay Safe Crossing Safety

Last year, we were fortunate to have negotiated with Banyule Council over the installation of two zebra crossings to support students and families walking to school. We continue to have one important supervised crossing on Davies St. Recently, we have received news of inappropriate crossing of students. Please ensure that students are crossing under the direction of the trained supervisor. At no point should cars be dropping students at or near these protected zones.

Breakfast Warms Hearts and Fills Stomachs Mondays and Thursday Mornings

AN energetic 65 students joined us for breakfast this morning before school. These breakfasts are another opportunity for students to independently start the day. It not only aims to provide a healthy start to the day but also a warm welcome to the school day. This term we are providing meals for between 40 and 60 students. Thanks to all the teachers and Education Support Staff who bring this experience together.

Instructional Model: 1 Building a Calm and Warm Learning Culture

As noted in last week’s newsletter, each week we share a little more about the teaching and learning instructional model at Rosanna Primary School.

All learning in the classroom is underpinned by a calm and inclusive classroom that provides clear predictable routines and high expectations. At Rosanna Primary this is enhanced by the whole school Positive Reward System that ensures student positive behaviour is celebrated and rewarded. The values that underpin these expected behaviours are positively stated and explicitly taught. Inappropriate behaviour is discouraged and seen as an opportunity to reteach the behaviours that are expected. Student classroom expectations are co constructed and reflect our whole school values. Classroom procedures and routines build a predictable and fluency to lessons in moments of transition, distribution of materials and even gaining the attention of students. These routines invite all students to be active learners where effort is celebrated.

District Cross Country

Tuesday 19 May

We wish all those who are travelling to the District Cross Country well on Tuesday next week. They will be competing at Banyule Flats with students from across are local schools. We look forward to hearing stories of their experiences and encourage them to give their best.

School Photo Day

Wednesday 27 May

School Photos have been happening in schools forever! They provide a marker in a child’s life as they transition to adulthood. These dates are booked a year in advance and while we understand that this day has clashed with a number of events and celebrations we have been unable to move the date. While we have a draft schedule for the day, this is liable to shift and change right up to the day of photos. If you would like to know when your child’s class is due then please don’t hesitate to call the office or send through an email.

National Simultaneous Storytime

Wednesday 27 May

We’re looking forward to celebrate the importance of reading by participating in the 2026 National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS), held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.

This year we are reading Luna Roo the Kangaroo Baller. Rookie captain, Luna Roo, leaves nothing on the pitch as she leads FC Outback in a thrilling face-off against Bush United. Faced with a spider goalkeeper, snakes in attack and bubbling nerves, Luna must trust her skills and her teammates to soar to victory. Written by football veterans Adam Jackson and Adrian Lloyd, Luna Roo captures all the intense excitement of the game, with a heart warming message that courage and determination are a winning combination.

Tentative Proposed Industrial Action

Thursday morning 28 May

The Victorian Government Schools Agreement

(an industrial agreement that sets the pay, working conditions, and rules for staff working in Victorian government schools) continues to be negotiated between the government and staff of government schools. While the Australian Education Union have foreshadowed further industrial action on the morning only of Thursday 28 May, they have suspended such rolling stoppages up until the end of this week. While we are all hopeful that a negotiated outcome is derived soon this particular proposed stop work action remains tentative. I will update the school community as soon as further information is known.

2027 Prep Information Morning

Saturday 30 May

If you know of someone who is considering enrolling in the upcoming year, please let them know they are most welcome to find out more about our school by attending a range of events at the school. These opportunities can be found here.

ParentED: Cyber Safety Digital Explorers, Risks & Rewards

7:00pm to 8:30pm, Wednesday 3 June

Our ParentED focus provides an opportunity for parents to gather to discuss a range of significant issues that shape the parenting experience. Last term we began our education evenings by exploring emotional regulation of children. Parents have identified cybersafety as another significant area that impacts the health and wellbeing of children.

In this workshop we have asked a representative of Evolve Edu to equip parents and carers with the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to guide their child/ren towards a positive and safe online experience. They will also present to staff later in the year and support a collective understanding of ways to respond and support students in a digital space.

Please make sure that you book a seat so that we can cater for your attendance on the night. Bookings can be made here.
