Assistant Principal
I hope that you and your families are managing to stay well as we head into the second half of this term! Teachers are busily assessing student progress and we are continuing to see our students displaying our key expected behaviours of being respectful, resilient, and empathetic in both the classroom and the outdoor play areas.
Please read below for an important message about our Respectful Relationships curriculum for term 3 which is taught through our weekly wellbeing lessons.
Respectful Relationships Curriculum – Topic 7 – Gender and Identity
Respectful Relationships Education is a core component of the Victorian Curriculum from prep to year 12 and is being taught in all government and Catholic schools. The Primary Education program is based on the idea that everyone in our community deserves to be respected, valued, and treated equally. We know that changes in attitudes and behaviours can be achieved when positive attitudes, behaviours and equality are embedded in our education settings.
Respectful Relationships is about embedding a culture of respect and equality across our entire community, from our classrooms to staff rooms, sporting fields, fetes, and social events. This approach leads to positive impacts on a student's academic outcomes, their mental health, classroom behaviour and relationships between teachers and students.
In term 3 our students will be beginning Topic 7. Gender and Identity learning activities assist students to challenge stereotypes and critique the influence of gender stereotypes on attitudes and behaviour. They learn about key issues relating to human rights and focus on the importance of respect within relationships. The activities promote respect for diversity and difference.
Please see the curriculum documents from which the teachers will draw their 4-5 lessons from over the term. The teachers at each level will communicate the weekly focuses in advance so that you, as parents and carers, are aware of the content being covered.
We respect the rights and choices of our families to educate their children on these topics personally, in line with their personal, religious and cultural beliefs. If you do not want your child/ren to participate in these lessons in Term 3 please complete the attached Google Form and alternate activities and classroom spaces will be arranged.
This message is also being shared via our Compass Newsfeed, including pdf versions of the curriculum program, and the information will remain available until the end of term 3.
