Keeping Teenagers Engaged During the Holidays

With the holidays upon us, it's a time of excitement and relaxation for families. For teenagers, this break is a much-needed respite from the rigours of school, providing an opportunity to unwind and recharge. While it's essential that they use this time to relax, it's equally as important to keep their minds active and engaged, to ensure they're prepared for the upcoming school term.

Finding the balance between leisure and mental stimulation can be challenging, but with thoughtful planning, parents can help their teenagers make the most of their holidays. This is particularly crucial for ATAR students, who should continue with moderate studies to maintain their exam preparation and avoid a post-holiday crash. Below are some practical tips to help keep their minds sharp while allowing them to enjoy their holidays.

Planning engaging activities

  • Explore nearby museums, science centres or historical sites.
  • Visit national parks, botanical gardens or wildlife sanctuaries.
  • Enrol in classes such as coding, cooking, art or photography.
  • Join sports camps or clinics to improve physical fitness and skills.

Maintaining a balanced routine

  • Start the day with a healthy breakfast and a review of the day’s activities.
  • Mix educational tasks, physical activities and leisure time.
  • Encourage activities like reading, listening to music or practicing mindfulness.
  • Spend time together playing board games, cooking or watching movies.

Promoting moderate study for ATAR students

  • Create a realistic study timetable that includes breaks and leisure activities.
  • Use this time to address subjects or topics that need extra attention.
  • Utilise online platforms offering courses relevant to their curriculum.
  • Form or join study groups with peers to maintain a collaborative learning environment.

Encouraging productive hobbies and interests

  • Engage in painting, drawing, knitting or other crafts.
  • Encourage writing stories, keeping a journal or blogging.
  • Experiment with home science kits or simple DIY projects.
  • Spend evenings stargazing and learning about constellations and planets.

Facilitating social interaction

  • Participate in local community events, clubs or church groups.
  • Organise playdates with friends or family.
  • Encourage participation in community service or volunteering projects.

Prioritising health and wellness

  • Develop a daily exercise routine, including yoga, running or team sports.
  • Go for hikes, bike rides or play outdoor games.
  • Teach teens about healthy eating habits and involve them in meal planning and cooking.
  • Ensure a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Emphasising safety

  • Set limits on screen time and encourage offline activities.
