Climate Canons
Laudato Si’ Art Competition
Pope Francis wrote a letter addressed to every person on this planet, asking us all to protect our common home, Earth. In his encyclical, Laudato Si’, Pope Francis speaks openly about the devastating effects the ecological crisis has on people and the planet. He says that climate change is real, urgent and it must be tackled, asking us to remember that the climate is 'a common good, belonging to all and meant for all'.
The Climate Canons hosted an art competition, inspired by Laudato Si', with the theme of 'Nature is God's Art', 'What kind of world do we want to leave to those who come after us, to children who are now growing up?' or 'Praise be to Thee my Lord through all Your creation' (all quotes from Pope Francis). Congratulations to Fay O'Toole (Year 8) and Fiona Rasquinha (Year 7) for their excellent artwork, prizes were awarded at our final College assembly for the term.
World Environment Day
5 June is World Environment Day. Each year millions of people from governments, businesses, civil society, and educational institutions raise awareness and take action on environmental issues, aiming to protect the planet's future. This year's theme 'Our Land, Our Future. We are #GenerationRestoration' emphasises the importance of restoring land, combating desertification and enhancing resilience to drought.
The Climate Canons observed World Environment Day on Thursday 7 June with games and information board. Thank you to all the students who were involved and remember every day is a day to care for our environment.
World Oceans Day
World Oceans Day was first proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro as a way to celebrate our world's shared ocean and our personal connection to the sea, as well as to raise awareness about the crucial role the ocean plays in our lives and the important ways people can help protect it. The ocean covers over 70% of the planet. It is our life source, supporting humanity’s sustenance and that of every other organism on Earth.
The Climate Canons observed World Oceans Day on Monday 10 June with a fishing game and activities. A Blooket quiz was also run to challenge students’ knowledge about oceans. Congratulations to Tyler Howly (Year 7) and Pratyaksh Sangwan (Year 7) for achieving top marks.
