TFS Home Fire Safety Program K-6

We are looking forward to having a firefighter from the Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) visit the College next week (27-31 May) to present a Home Fire Safety Program to our Kinder to Year 6 students.

Kindergarten students, whilst not receiving structured lessons, can expect a visit from the firefighter who will leave some free fun activities for the students to complete.

The age-appropriate program for Prep to Year 6 classes is designed to raise fire awareness in children and includes fun in-class activities, videos, activity books, giveaways and an introduction to the new kid’s website www.tfskids.com.au

Class teachers will be attending the sessions with the students and answer any questions during the week that arise.

Parents and other family members are encouraged to read the information and assist their child with the after-school activities provided.

The Tasmania Fire Service aims to deliver appropriate fire safety education to every primary school child in Tasmania and is part of the TFS’s ongoing commitment to create a fire safe Tasmania.

Key Fire Safety Messages include:

Wake up - Install a smoke alarm in every bedroom

Plan and practice a home fire escape plan with the whole family

In a fire crawl low and go, go, go to the nearest exit

In an emergency call triple zero

Keep flammable material at least two metres from the heater

If your clothes catch fire, stop, drop, rock and roll

Keep matches and lighters away from children

Cooking - Turn it off before you turn away

Cool a burn under cold water for at least 20 minutes

Most house fires can be avoided. Make your home fire safe

More information for parents and carers can be found on the website www.tfseducation.com.au

Year 1 News

Year 1 students have been enjoying their new unit of inquiry looking at the different forces involved in moving an object. Students have learnt that most of our playground equipment uses both ‘push’ and ‘pull’ forces to function.

Students worked with partners to create two mini slides for a small object. One slide had to be as quick as possible while the other slide had to be as slow as possible. The students used various angles and materials to work on this project. (see photos attached)

Year 1 is also continuing on with their fine arts unit of inquiry, where students are learning expression through art and looking at different styles and techniques of art. One artist they have been learning about is Picasso, who is famous for abstract portraits. Students were amazed that art doesn’t need to look realistic but rather can be used in exciting ways to express feelings and ideas. Students then had a go at creating their own abstract portraits to express their personalities. They used colours and shapes that they identified with and added words that expressed their strengths and passions.
