Greetings from Shaun
Education Week
Last week was Education Week, this was an opportunity to celebrate every aspect of learning, with this year’s theme being ‘Spotlight on STEM’. Throughout the week classes highlighted the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in our everyday lives, in the classroom and beyond and engaged the students in range of science lessons. Who knows, we may have the next Michelle Simmons here with us at Northcote PS.
National Education Support (ES) Day
Also as part of Education Week, last Thursday the 16th of May, was National Education Support Day. This is a day for us to celebrate the amazing support we receive from our ES team and acknowledge the incredible contribution that they make to Northcote PS team. We couldn't do this work without them. To Caterina, Donna, Sarah, Susi, Carol and Julia, thank you to each and every one of you who make our jobs a little lighter every day.
National Simultaneous Storytime
This week on the22nd of May , the National Simultaneous Storytime was held. The read along took place at 12:00pm, where over 2 million school age children across Australia took part in the day and Northcote PS was a part of it!
The purpose of the read along is driven by an initiative from the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) to encourage young Australians to read and enjoy more books.
Each year ALIA select and announce which book, and in 2024 the book was "Bowerbird Blues" by Aura Parker. If you would like to read the story yourself, speak to Susi our Library Tech to borrow it from our very own Northcote collection.
Bowerbird Blues stars a beautiful bowerbird on the search for (you guessed it) BLUE! It’s a moving story of longing and connection, that unfolds as the bowerbird’s search sends him soaring across the sea, sky and city. He swoops and snatches vibrant treasures for his collection, and soon his bower – a mix of natural and unnatural objects – attracts something greater and more fulfilling than he could ever have imagined.’
Here is a photo of 1/2C listening to Aura Parker, reading the story Bowerbird Blues.
2025 Prep Enrolments
Do you or someone you know have a child starting school in 2025? We are now accepting enrolments for next year, with school tours being held fortnightly on Tuesday mornings at 9:15am.
2024 Attitude to School Survey for Years 4 to 6
Coming up in a couple of weeks, on Wednesday the 12th of June, our students in Year 4 to 6 will be asked to participate in the 2024 Attitude to School Survey. This is an annual survey that the Victorian Department of Education coordinates for every student enrolled in a government school from Year 4 to Year 12. This survey gives our students an opportunity to have a say about life at school here at Northcote PS. While participation is voluntary, it is a great oppurtunity for our older students to provide us with feedback about their school experience and also helps us to target resources and supports.
Parents of those students in Years 4 to 6, should have recieved a compass notification outlining the details, which also had an attachment with further information. Please reach out if you would like to discuss this further.
Take Care,
Shaun.
