Level 6

Level  6

Writing

Students in Level 6 have been learning about persuasive texts and how to construct them. Concepts of modality, building arguments, how to respond to a negative review and the language that is used in these texts, have been the focus. This week, students have started to use this knowledge and are applying it to the concept of Debating. Students have been exploring how to build arguments, listening carefully to others and respond accordingly, as well as how to support arguments with research, facts and extending their ideas.

Reading

Students have been exploring different types of persuasive devices and texts. This week, students began to breakdown and compare print ads and the persuasive techniques that are used in them to target their audience, as well as the purpose of each author and their content. Student have analysed tv ads, social media ads, episodes of Little Lunch and BTN, and poetry. They have looked at their similarities/differences and identifyed the techniques that the ads use and contain. Later this term, students will create their own print and visual ads for their Inquiry projects which will centre around elections and governments, where they can showcase the skills that they have developed from analysing ads and investigating persuasive devices.

Inquiry

This term, students have been learning about the different levels of Government via our Civics and Citizenship topic, ‘Power’. As part of their studies, Heathmont East welcomed one of our Members of Parliament, the Honourable Shaun Leane, to speak to the Level 6 cohort about his role, government and to answer questions that our student body had for him. Shaun also shared his experiences around his role as President of the Lower House and the process of how legislation is discussed and then its journey to possibly becoming Victorian law.
