East Gippsland Cross Country

41 Bairnsdale Secondary College students attended the East Gippsland region interschool cross country event at Lakes Entrance Golf Course on Monday 27th May. It was our largest contingent to attend at this level in 6 years and they were ready for action.

The fairways were deceptively perfect, faking the look of a firm running surface. Little did our runners know that the super soft Couch Grass was like running on the Ninety Mile Beach (slight exaggeration).

The day started off with the 16 yo and17-20 yo Boys completing a 5km course which proved exhausting for most involved. The 17–20 yo Boys age group was an outstanding race with Patrick coming away with the win and Campbell in 3rd. In the 16yr boys event, Alex made his presence felt holding onto 2nd place with a great run. All the remaining races were run over a 3km distance, still proving a very hard task on the day. Our girls stood tall with Juliette,17-20 yo Girls, coming in a very close second and 16 yo Girls Rita was a standout, pinning the blue ribbon for first place.

The sun was shining and with next to no wind, a couple of our boys turned on the afterburners. Ayrton in the 15y o Boys was just 7 seconds off his Nagle opponent, claiming 3rd place and Ahren showing us all how it's done, winning the 13yo Boys age group.

Our college was just outstanding in their pursuit, claiming 3 x 1st / 2 x 2nd / 2 x 3rd and a whopping 18 top 10 finishers. We focus now on the Gippsland Division at Drouin with 23 students putting themselves out there to do their best. Good luck to all!
