Anzac Day Reflection

ANZAC Day is the anniversary of the day when Australian and New Zealand soldiers landed on Gallipoli in 1915. It is also the time for all Australians to recognise the more than 2 million people who have served our countries in all conflicts, and to remember more than 103,000 Australians who sacrificed their lives in our country’s name.

Last Wednesday, our College came together to commemorate ANZAC Day with an assembly. This assembly allowed us to remember soldiers who sacrificed their lives in war for our freedom, and those who continue to serve in other countries during these precautious times.

We were honoured to welcome Corporal Alicia Cann to address students and staff. Corporal Cann talked about her experiences of being in the military and also shared with us the different aspects and challenges of being a solider as she served overseas.

During the assembly, there were several moments that invited us to pause and reflect on the true meaning of ANZAC Day. The wreath laying, The Ode and The Last Post created a respectful and powerful atmosphere across the College, followed by a minute's silence.

The musical item Poppies byLoreta Finperformed by Viotti Strings and Symphonic Band, deepened this sense of remembrance, and the poem In Flanders Fields reminded us of the real lives and sacrifices behind the history we learn about, teaching us honour, memory and respect.

As a College community, we are called to live out these values in our everyday lives, by showing compassion and unity. In doing so, we honour the legacy of those who came before us, not only in words, but in the way we live.

As we pause to remember, ANZAC Day encourages us to carry forward the ANZAC spirit in our daily lives, we are called to both support one another and make a positive difference in our communities.
