News and Information from Secondary
Last Sunday, we set off for Canberra on a very quiet bus, filled with sleepy students (and staff!) The afternoon was spent exploring Questacon, where students enjoyed having the galleries almost to themselves and immersing themselves in hands-on science.
Monday was a big day of learning and inspiration. We visited the Australian Electoral Commission, Parliament House, and even met Tammy Tyrrell, Senator for Tasmania. Students were captivated by Question Time in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, and particularly impressed with how the President of the Senate handled the lively debates!
Tuesday was a slower-paced but fascinating day, including tours of the Australian Institute of Sport and the Australian National University, giving students a glimpse of possible future pathways. In the evening, we visited the Australian War Memorial and attended the moving Last Post Ceremony, a powerful moment of reflection and respect that brought the day to a thoughtful close. Students from our school undertook an education tour of the national capital and were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage, and democracy.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding to our school in the amount of $750 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
Some of the best memories, however, have come from the simple moments — the card games, the fire pits, and the laughter shared over every meal together. The challenges were many and very much by design: living with friends for nine days, sharing one shower between 14 girls, being away from home for an extended time, and adapting to new routines.
Through it all, our students have grown, persevered, and stepped well outside their comfort zones. We couldn’t be prouder of the way they have embraced every experience. After the long trip home and a very well-earned long weekend, we are now looking forward to a photography session this week!
