Last week, our Year 6 students embarked on a four-day adventure to Canberra for their annual camp. It was an unforgettable experience filled with learning, exploration, and memories that will last a lifetime. Here are some reflections from their time away:
Violet B & Avery S - Travel and Mt Ainsley:
On Monday the 27th of October 2025 – 30th of October 2025, the Year 6’s at DCS went on a school trip to Canberra, Australia. Monday morning we flew out of Devonport to Melbourne, we had a layover in Melbourne for about 40 minutes, and we flew from Melbourne to Canberra. On Monday afternoon we went to a lookout named Mount Ainsley. Canberra is surrounded by mountains or large hills which was one of the reasons why they chose Canberra for our capital city. There was a competition to design Canberra city and the winners were Walter Burley Griffin and his wife.
Fisayo O – The Mint:
In Canberra, the first stop we had was going to The Royal Australian Mint. I thought it was pretty exciting getting to see all the different coins and seeing the way coins are made. My favourite coins were the $5 coins because they had special designs, and I also enjoyed designing a digital coin with Annabelle in the museum section. Overall, I thought it was super good and I rate my experience a 9/10.
Abraham O – Museum:
When we got to the National Museum of Australia, we split into two groups. My group went with a tour guide lady and she took us to the first part of the museum which had Pharlap’s heart (a famous racehorse) which was three times the size of a regular horse’s heart. There was an old F1 car that once raced in Tasmania and a massive pool table that had interesting wooden carving in the design. Overall, the museum was pretty good. 7/10.
Isla P - Parliament House and the National Zoo & Aquarium:
When we went to the Zoo, we saw so many animals but sadly we didn’t get to see the whole zoo because the Zoo was so big! At Parliament House we had a tour of the Lower and Upper House, and we got to role play The House of Representatives with different students having different "official" jobs.
Olly L - National Capital Exhibition:
At the National Capital Exhibition I had a pretty good time, and it was interesting learning about how the capital was made. I found out it was actually made from a vote of designs from people all over the world, with the winning design by Walter Griffin and Marion Griffin. I enjoyed re-modelling the city, it was really funny the way Ezra explained our design.
Lilla C - Australian Institute of Sport:
At the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) we got a tour of a few different training facilities such as the pool, gym, volleyball, gymnastics and more. When we finished here we got to go to a room where there were simulators and different games for lots of sports. We then finished at the gift shop where we could buy things.
Here is some quick reflections from a few others …
Hadassah B: Questacon was super cool and exciting. There was so much to learn. Parliament House was also amazing with the House of Representatives drama and meeting Anne Urquhart.
Audrey E: The delights of Questacon brought new knowledge to our brains. Parliament House was educational and interesting.
Reuben K: Questacon was a fun science and physics trip, while the Australian War Memorial was a crazy historical trip with lots of really cool things to see even though it was short.
Charlotte C: I really liked the earthquake room at Questacon, there were so many exciting things to do and learn.
Banjo C: Parliament house was very official and important. Questacon was fun with all the ‘sciency’ and educational things.
Harper S: Our bus driver Mark was the coolest dude ever! He told us so many cool facts about Canberra and he let us watch movies and listen to music while we were on the bus.
