In all classrooms this term, students have been reading, writing, and sharing poems that celebrate unique voices and perspectives. Poetry offers students a powerful way to explore language, emotion, and imagination.  From playful rhymes to thoughtful free verse, poetry encourages creative expression while strengthening reading and writing skills. 

Here are some fun and interesting poetry facts

• Poetry is one of the oldest forms of writing in the world
• Not all poems rhyme; free-verse poetry doesn’t follow any set pattern.
• Haikus come from Japan and traditionally focus on nature, using a 5-7-5 syllable pattern.
• Some poems are so short they’re only one line long
• Rap music uses many of the same techniques as poetry, like rhythm, rhyme, and wordplay.
• Poetry can be spoken, written, performed, or even turned into songs.
• Many famous poets started writing when they were young
• Reading or writing poetry has been shown to help reduce stress and boost creativity.
